Corn Snake On My Gas Tank Ugh!!!

My husband was doing yard work this morning, and what do you think he found? Yes, that is right, another snake, and yet another breed of snake. I seriously think I have to move. I grew up in rattle snake country, and never once saw a snake, for 35 years, not even one. I have lived here almost three years, in this house, in the town, and have seen five snakes, all different. So while my husband, and kids were staring at it, trying to decide what it was, I was standing on the porch yelling at them to get away from it, and waving my hands all around. Can you hear me hyperventilating? It seems it is a corn snake, which supposedly is very harmless. Harmless, it can still bite can't it? This is not the actual one, I couldn't think straight enough to get the camera, but I did get the pleasure of looking at it, and this is what it looked like. It was the slowest moving snake I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. Even after poking it with a stick, it just moseyed along like it owned the place. So now I have to walk around my own yard with a big stick, or hammer, just to go in the back yard. I thought having dogs was supposed to ward the snakes off. Whoever told me that, was so wrong. I even got a second dog, and the snakes still come to my yard. I think they know I don't like them, and they all sit around laughing at me. Ms Laura, and Ms Kristy I know you are laughing at me. Ugh!!!!!!

Oh my goodness Ms. Melissa! I know this is not good for you and your fear of snakes and critters. It seems your yard really does attract the snakes quite often. We live way out here in the country and I have not seen the first one yet. Weird! Do you think they are attracted to the swimming pool and looking for water? Just a thought.

That would figure right? I love my pool.

We live in town, and have never had mice, or rats. This is the first corn snake too. There is a farm not far from here, and people are allowed to have chickens, and such in their yards, in town. Maybe that is why, but I don't have any of those things in my yard for it to eat, yuck.

Hey Melissa.. I just saw one of these on the dirt road near my house 5 mins ago. I know they are kinda gruesome looking but they keep the rat/mice population down. I watched him for about 10 minutes while he was sunning and then he ambled back into a field. It's healthy to go to alert status when you see any snake-but these guys are good neighbors. They will run from you at every opportunity unless injured or cornered.. Happy Trails from Ft. Worth, Texas.
