Why I Homeschool: Flexibility

Welcome to my weekly Homeschool meme called, Why I Homeschool. This week I am going to talk about the flexibility that homeschooling allows me to have. Some of you know I work in the medical field. I am lucky enough, for the past two years, to be able to only work one night a week. This was not actually intentional, but has been a true blessing in our homeschool adventures. Not so much my pocketbook, LOL! Nursing affords me the flexibility to work a variety of shifts if I needed to. Because I stay per diem, which means I get no benefits, means I work when I want or they need me. So, if I needed to work more I could. I could do any of the three shifts, and homeschool. Why? Because homeschooling allows me to school when I want to. For example if I had to work full time third shift, my kids are old enough now that I could come home nap for a few hours, then homeschool in the evening. You could homeschool anytime of the day you want, even over night if you needed to. You could just school on the weekend if you had to. Whatever works for your family. I love this part of homeschooling! Now with that said, I do have to realize that someday they will need to live on their own schedule and be able to get up and go to a job and function in the real world. DJ very often hates doing a five day in a row school week. He will sometimes ask me if he can have say Wednesday off, and he will school on Saturday. As long as he does what he is supposed to do, I do not object to this. Homeschooling allows me to be a mom, teacher, and nurse all at the times I need to be. Why do you homeschool? Why I Homeschool

I homeschool so I can relearn everything I learned in school, LOL! Seriously though I can not believe how much I remember, and how much I never learned, or forgot. Teaching your children, unless you are already a teacher which I am not, is like going back to school yourself. It has been a fun school year, and I am happy with the progress we have made. DJ's 4H photography book was handed in yesterday. I am eager to see what Mr Chris comments will be. Caitlin, because she is Cloverbud, has a book that can be completed over two years. She has one more interview, which she is avoiding, and then hers will basically be done.

Why I Homeschool

I homeschool so we can enjoy our summer vacation. This is not really one of the reasons that I began to homeschool, but it sure is nice to enjoy our summer vacation. I need it, they need it, we all need it. Most public schools give some kind of review or homework over the summer months. Reading lists, or other assignments. While I see nothing wrong with this, I do think summer vacation should be summer vacation. We do some work, but not enough to be considered work. We relax, regroup, and enjoy the break. For those of you who visit me through Mom Blogger's Club, I still can not access my account. I have asked, and received a password reset, but I still can not log in. I apologize and as soon as have time to figure out what is wrong, hopefully I will fix it. Has anyone else ever had that problem on that website?

Why I Homeschool!

OMG I will give you an example of what this article says, and you will see for yourself why I homeschool.

First let me say that the 9th circuit hears cases in CA and surrounding states. I don't know their complete jurisdiction, but I do know they come out with some pretty outrageous rulings. Like the one in the article where the court basically ruled that parents have no rights to say what their children learn once they enter the public school domain. Basically you lose your parental rights. What gives them the right to do that? Granted there were supposed consent forms passed out, but they were ambiguous and untruthful. To say that a public school, or any public institution, trumps the parents rights, concerns, beliefs, and just plain trust is in my opinion not just wrong but unconstitutional as well. I wonder why no one has challenged this ruling yet? Or maybe they have and I don't know it. I can understand why a public entity would want to assess for early sexual abuse, but parents should have the right to choose what kinds of questions, images and written materials their children are exposed to, especially in first grade. Do we have no rights anymore in this country? What happened to the land of the free?

Just one more less headache I have to deal with, because I homeschool. Dealing with schools that think they are your child's parent, and know what is best for them.

Why I Homeschool

Why I Homeschool

Why I homeschool. For me, I solely believe in the separation of church and state. I won't go into great detail as to why, because that is not the purpose of this post. While I do agree in separation of church and state, I also appreciate the fact that I can teach my children religion, or religious views in any way I see fit, in my homeschool endeavors. While I do not buy religious curriculum, I like the freedom of being able to pray, talk about religion, and all other religious or non-religious activities during our homeschool times. No one can tell me what I can or can not teach. I love it!

Why I Homeschool

The picture looks gloomy right? Actually it is fog with the morning sun peeking through. DJ took this photo as part of his photography lessons. So that gets me to the point of Why I Homeschool.

I like homeschooling because my kids can focus on things they enjoy learning about, plus the basic elements of education. Of course we learn math, science, language arts, and all the rest, but we can be more detail oriented about the things they each love to learn about. I can not believe how much DJ has progressed since Sept when he did his first photography lesson. Sometimes it is time consuming, but he enjoys it, and I get all kinds of cool pictures to show off. Caitlin is just starting to blossom into what she enjoys learning about most. A lot of the stuff kids learn in public school is stuff they will never ever use, or even need to know. So why teach it? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Why I Homeschool

I homeschool because my kids can be their own unique self, without fear of reprisal. Caitlin is shy and reserved, and doesn't really care much for change. DJ is bold and outgoing, yet sensitive and kind. I love to let my children grow to be their own little selves, without someone telling them they are different and need to comform.

Why I Homeschool

Each Wednesday, Miss Moe, has challenged me to write about why I chose to homeschool. Of course there are so many reasons, why I chose this path, but one of them is because I find society to be so judgemental. Everyone it seems finds the need to judge others for their looks, clothes, religion beliefs or lack of, finances, sexuality, morals or rules they live by, etc. These are all things I do not want my children to do. I may not agree with the way someone else lives or does things, but it is not my place to judge them. I would still be kind, compassionate, and caring to anyone. The only exception would be if you somehow earned my distrust. I don't want my children to learn to be cruel and unkind to others because someone else says they should be, or says that person is living in a way that is wrong. I do not know one person who is perfect, or has lived a life of pure innocence free of sin. Even as a homeschooler we face judgement from other homeschoolers. If you don't teach from a religious point of view, are not conservative enough, or you speak your mind in a bold manner, you may be shunned. I think it is a shame that homeschoolers, which is not an easy task to uptake, are forced to deal with judgement from other homeschoolers. It makes me sad to think about it.

Why I Homeschool

One of the reasons I chose to homeschool is because I can steer the direction of socialization, and family life. I am not criticizing anyone when I say this, but I think most children are too socialized by friends, and activities outside of family life. I think this is having a negative effect on society in general. Don't misunderstand all kids need friends, and socialization, plus group activities, I just think there is way too much of it in the every day life of most children.

Why I Homeschool

One of the other things I love about homeschooling, is I can take my kids on field trips without jumping through hoops, whenever I want to. Today we took our second trip to Seaworld in Orlando. We bought a season pass as Christmas gifts, and we hope to go at least two more times come Fall when it is cool again. It is brutal in summer, so I don't see that happening. Though we are all tired, we had a ball. This time we got to see the Believe show with the killer whales. I am really glad because they are retiring this particular show later this month, for a new killer whale show. The particular picture shown was the whale waving at the crowd, as he cruised by. Very cool show! I will share more pictures later.

Why I Homeschool

This is a weekly meme that I joined for every Wednesday. Oh wait, it is Thursday. That is right I forgot yesterday, so I am doing it today. If anyone would like to join let me know.

One of the reasons I homeschool, there are many, is because I can sign my kids up for cool classes that I think are good for them to take, as part of their education. Like this free 30 minute First Aid class, that DJ will be doing today. I have to give credit where credit is due, I found this link on Homeschool.com two years ago, and have been saving it until now. Your child must be in the fifth grade to take the class.
