Before I get to the topic, I must say I was stunned last night when Adam was in the bottom two, on American Idol. I just could not believe it. There I got that off my chest, now on to other things.
Florida offers children a Virtual Homeschool option. Many parents choose this option, as it is free, and you do not have to worry about planning a curriculum. The child must be in at least fifth grade, though they are adding younger grades, for the next school year, and attend public school for at least one year. That last sentence is where the problem arises. Why should a parent, who wants to homeschool their child be required to enroll them in public school for one year, only to pull them out a year later. We can make all kinds of assumptions as to why that rule is there, but that is another topic. There is a petitition going around to amend this law. Governor Charlie Crist has signed the petition, as have I. I do not use the Virtual Homeschool option, but that does not mean I won't in the future. I also feel it is unfair, and a means to control homeschoolers, and should be removed. If you would like to show your support, and sign the petition you can go here. Thank you in advance for anyone who can support this issue.
Tomorrow is test day, so I have no lesson plans to post. Have a great day, everyone.
Tons of homeschool info, tips, and links. Homeschooling in Florida, plus lots of other great info. Join me on our Homeschool journey. I have been adding to this blog for almost our whole time as homeschoolers, eight years. There is an abundance of info at your fingertips.

Wow Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey
If you missed American Idol last night, you missed a good one. I think they all did excellent, but Adam, and Danny definitely stole the show. Danny finally showed some more of his abilities, especially in the performance department. Allison still appears to be uncomfortable with her own personality, but she sang awesome. How did your favorites do last night?

April 29th Bloggers Unite For Hunger
This is something that is close to my heart, because I really do not see any reason for anyone to be starving, and hungry. Heifer International, is using the month of April to help people learn to plant, grow, and harvest their own food. They supply the seeds, and the knowledge to get this done. I can not think of a more worth cause, then helping to rid the world of hunger.
April 29th Bloggers Unite for Hunger and Hope. Just by blogging about this topic, you can help feed a hungry person. Knowledge is power, and the more we know, the more we can help. Every day children are starving, all around the world. Some have no clean water to drink, and I have even read stories of them making mud cakes that they sell, and eat. Here are some of the startling facts I have learned.
WHO says 1/3 of children are underfed, and another 1/3 are starving. Think about that, that is a lot of children.
More than 500 million people live in, absolute poverty. Not they can not afford cable, or a cell phone, but absolute poverty some with no electricity, running water, or food to eat.
In the US 46% of African American children, and 49% of Latino children are considered chronically hungry.
No matter what your personal feelings are as to why hunger still exists in this world, it should not be. With all the money, and wealth so many countries have, why do children still suffer, and die. Why do we make it a personal, or political issue, instead of a humanity issue? Would you like to help, here are some ways you can.
Join this event and add a badge to your blog before April 29.
Watch for upcoming news releases and topic backgrounders.
Visit Heifer International to learn more about Pass On The Gift.
Make a small donation or take some other action to end world hunger.
If everyone gave just one dollar, think of how much you could help a starving child.

Writing: Write a letter
Math: Graphs, multiplication, division
Language Arts: Linking verbs, writing a description
Spelling: Lesson 29- write each spelling word and circle the vowels

Common Birds, Trees, and Flowers Native To Florida
Tomorrows Science class will be covering common birds, trees, and flowers native to Florida. DJ has already taken out several books, from our local library. He loves to read to his sister, and learn about nature. He teaches her all kinds of neat facts. He is actually a better Science teacher than me lol. I just supply the tools, and he sucks it up like a sponge. I found a very cool website sponsored by the University of Florida all about native plants, and animals. You can view it here. I also added some very nice video clips on the Everglades, the area known as the Nature Coast, and birds of Florida. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Child Sent Home With A Turd In His Backpack!
When I first read this headline, I was baffled as to what might be the real issue here. Must be my mind does not think of the wicked, and down right nasty. This kindergarten child, with special needs, in Washington State was sent home with a turd in his backpack. Attached to the turd was a note from the teacher, saying this turd was found on her floor, in her classroom. Ugh what is wrong with this woman, she is just sick. To make it all even worse, the school has not released her of her duties, or even suspended her. I can not tell you how outrageous this is. First let me say I am not a woosy parent who does not believe in discipline for children. However, I am a parent that finds adults who bully, manipulate, demean, or in other ways are just plain cruel to be a waste of society. What does this teacher possibly have to offer any student, with a mentality such as hers. If teachers are over worked, and can not handle their duties, please be responsible and leave the job. I can not understand why she has not been charged with child abuse.
That is my rant for this Sunday, stay tuned for next week, I am sure something will get me excited. Have a great day.

Fun Friday 5 Things About Me
I recently started a yahoo group, for bloggers. It is called Blogging For Fun, and it really is just for fun, and support of fellow bloggers. We had some discussions about having a weekly topic, so we are giving it a try, to see if everyone joins, in, and likes it. The first one for Fun Friday, is easy tell 5 things about yourself. It can be real simple, or as advanced as they want. So here are mine.
1- I am not very photogenic. I really do not even like my picture taken. I think it is hereditary, none of my siblings do either. This picture was taken last August, at Chuck E Cheese. It is about 1 hr from our home, in Florida, and it was about 100 degrees, with no air in the car. I felt wilted, and sweaty lol. However, it was freezing in Chuck E Cheese and wish I had brought a sweater.
2- I am married, with two beautiful children, ages 8, and 4.
3- I am a nurse, only part time now, and have been since the age of 17.
4- We relocated from upstate NY, 4 yrs ago, to Florida to be with my mother who was here all by herself. She suffers from Fibromyalgia, and really needed to be where it was warm, though away from her whole family.
5- I am stubborn, strong willed, confident, but kind, and loving. I am a Leo.
I look forward to everyone in the group sharing 5 things about themselves.
Happy Fun Friday, everyone. Have a great weekend, mine will be crazy, probably for the next 3 weekends.

My Green Thumb Got A Little Greener
Do you see that, those are tomatoes. If you have been reading my blog, you know as part of our Science classes we plant things. The very first year we got a big fat F. Last year probably a B- or a C. We did get some tomatoes, but I think only two LOL. So I have been reading, and learning. Who knew growing a garden was so hard. Farmers have been doing it for centuries, and they certainly did not have all these fancy things we have now. Plus I want a natural garden, with no pesticides, not so easy. I found this awesome web site, that I use for all kinds of gardening help. The site does load a little slow, but it is worth the wait. We have lettuce, and onions coming up, too. They were planted a long time ago, and hopefully will produce good results. If you plant the onions with your lettuce, the bugs will not eat your lettuce. Who knew, and it seems to be working. One thing that I did learn is that the soil here stinks literally. It is dry, and practically devoid of all nutrients. I pot planted all of my plants, and then when they were big enough put them into the Earth in their original pot dirt. It seems to be working wonderfully. We just started Cukes, which will be staying in the pots, because they take up a lot of room to grow, and we are going to see if they will just vine up the porch rails. They certainly grow fast, I did them by seed on Sunday, and already they are up and going. I am going to try red peppers again, though I have never ever, not even once got a pepper to grow. They will be pot planted as well, and probably stay in the pots. We have all kinds of underground bugs that literally eat the plants from the bottom up. Wish me luck, we are hoping for an A this year, with lots of vegetables to show for it. My kids get a kick out of it, because I get so frustrated. They just like to dig in the dirt, and watch them grow, the fruits of their labor. Too bad we never get enough to sustain even a squirrel.
Tomorrow is test day, so I have no lesson plans to post. Have a great day, everyone.

Disco Week on American Idol, and Stranger Danger
Last night on American Idol, was kind of funny for me. Adam came out on top for me, with Allison second, the rest I really just did not care for at all. They can all sing, but I did not care for the way they changed, or interpreted the music. Most of them didn't even sound like Disco. I think Lil, or Anoop will probably go home this week. How did your favorites do?
Tomorrow for health class we will be talking about Stranger Danger. Aside from going over safety tips, phone numbers, addresses, how, and when to fight back, and other information, my kids will watch this short video on the topic.
Lesson Plans for 4/23/09:

Writing: Write a story about a germ
Spelling: Lesson 28- put your spelling words in alphabetical order
Vocabulary: Lesson 28- Write each vocab word, and definition 2x each

Learning About Your Local Community, Playgroup Date
Tomorrow is our second playgroup date, and it is Earth Day, and learn about your community in Social Studies. So if you go here you can learn about one of our local community attractions, Hart Springs. Florida is famous for its natural warm water springs. Here we have three, that are close to where we live. Hart Springs, Manatee Springs, and Fanning Springs. Crystal River, in Homasassa Springs, is about 1 hr from us, and that is where we have seen the manatees in their natural habitat. We visit our local library every two weeks. My kids love to take out books, and they are somewhat of celebrities there. Tomorrow we will be meeting our small playgroup there, for a book exchange. This is our second meeting, and everyone seems to get along well. If anyone that visits my blog lives in the Gilchrist county area, we are still accepting members. So far two of us moms homeschool, the other does not, though she is considering it for her youngest child.
As part of Earth day tomorrow, we will be planting a rose bush, that my husband bought, in rather sad shape, and we have nursed it back to health. It is sprouting new leaves, no buds yet, but soon I hope. This is my fourth rose bush, and they are doing amazingly well. My kids love nature, and especially bugs. Lord knows there are plenty of them here. It seems like every year, they find a bug they did not see last year. Like the very funny looking black grasshopper they found under their slide the other day. What they were doing under there I have no idea. I thought it must be a cricket, because I have never seen a black grasshopper before. So of course I googled black cricket with red stripe, to no avail. When I googled black grasshopper, this lovely creature came up. It seems my kids happened to be rummaging around under the slide at just the right time, because these were very small, young grasshoppers just being born. They climb up out of the dirt from where they were laid, in the fall. They did capture some, and have made them a home, in a jar with food, water, and air. I do not know how long they will live for, but they are excited. My daughter takes them out, and plays with them like they are toys. They are supposedly a pest, but my kids would beg to differ that. If you would like to learn about this very interesting bug you can go here

Earth Day, and Scientific Method
Tomorrow in Science we are learning about Scientific Method. Since my son is only in third grade, we are not covering the more complicated issues this year. We will be watching the short video below, with discussion to follow.
Earth Day is Wednesday April 22nd. We already do a lot of the things to help save our Earth. We pick up garbage, when we are out walking. We turn off our lights when not in use. Car pool, when we can, and do not drive if not necessary. We do not turn on our air conditioning until we have to, and then set it at the most bearable level. We reuse items when we can, rather than throw them away. We conserve our water, whenever possible. We also use those new GE energy lightsaver bulbs. I have to say they are pretty cool. We also plant a small garden ever year, I will get to that another day.
On Wednesday we will be planting a rose bush, for Earth Day. We already have quite a few trees, so we decided with the plant this year.
School Express offers several free themed units, for Earth Day. We chose the one on Pollution, and will be starting it tomorrow. I also found some other great sites for Earth Day, check them out, and use them in your teachings, if you choose.

I Need A Vacation!
Yes, I need a vacation, and Kissimmee is giving away 3 free vacations to Kissimmee Florida.
I for one, will be entering this contest for sure.
What can you do in Kissimmee? There is so much to do, and not all of it costs money. You can check out the historic downtown area of Kissimmee, St. Cloud, and Celebration. Have a lovely dinner for two after, and shop their lovely boutiques. There are nature trails, you can hike, and see the splendid habitats that make Florida so desirable. Plus you might just see a Bald Eagle. Did you know that the Kissimmee area has the larged American Bald Eagle population, in the lower 48. I did not, that is so exciting. You can take an airboat ride, and maybe see an alligatior, like the people pictured. I personally would not be excited to be that close to an alligator, but my kids would get a kick out of it.
I personally would want to go to Aquatica Seaworlds Water Park. You get to see the animals, like at Seaworld, plus enjoy the water park to beat the heat. There is a video you can watch on their site, telling about all the lings you can do while you are there. They have Cabana's you can rent for the day, for a really cool birthday party, anniversary, or other special event. They do have height restrictions for their rides, so be sure to check them out before you decide to visit this park.
Do not forget to enter the contest to win a 3 day/2night getaway for yourself. The April contest has already been done, but there will be two more drawings on May 1st, and June 1st, so there is still plenty of time.

Ridiculous Airline Rule
I have time for just a quickie post today. First did anyone notice I spelled Britain wrong, twice. I noticed it this morning, when checking my blog. Oh well, it is great to be not so perfect.
I heard something so ridiculous this morning, that I burst out laughing. It seems passengers on airplanes are complaining, when they have to sit next to a heavy set person. They complain they come over into their seat, and take up their space. Ok that is probably a fair complaint. I do not think I would want to be forced to share my seat with a complete stranger. However one airline in their infinite wisdom, charge an obese passenger for two seats, but the seats were not together. What, are you kidding me? How does that help the over weight passenger, or the passenger whose seat they are taking up space in. This leads me to believe the airline does not give a rats behind about the passenger that complained, but that it is about getting money in any way that they can. Come on this is absurd. If you are going to charge someone who is a little bit larger than the average passenger, for two seats, don't you think they should at least be next to each other, and I do not mean one seat on one side of the aisle and the seat next to it is across the aisle. Sometimes I think companies are just greedy, and will come up with any old excuse to rip you off.
I hope everyone has an awesome weekend.

Britians Got Talent, American Idol, Nutrition For Kids
Last night on American Idol the judges used their save, to keep Matt in the competition. It was exciting, and that means two contestants will go home next week, which is Disco week. That should be fun. I still do not understand the popularity of Kris, but that is just my opinion.
On the news this morning, they were going on about a woman named Susan Boyle. Seems Britian has a version of American Idol called Brits Got Talent. This woman is amazing. She is 48 yrs old, with the voice of an angel. But what makes her extra special is just herself alone. She is not young, she is not hip looking, but she has a wonderful set of pipes. I could not post the video, because it is disabled, but you can copy and paste the address below, and go watch her for yourself. It really is amazing.
Today for Health class we are covering Nutrition. Below is a Disney video geared at teaching kids about nutrition. It is really cute, check it out. This is a supplement to our work book nutrition papers.
Tomorrow, is test day. Have a great Thursday, everyone.

Anoop Desai My Top Pick This Week
Wow is all I can say. My pick to win is, and always has been Adam. But Anoop stole the show this week, and in my opinion was the best. He sang Everything I Do, by Bryan Adams, and I liked it even better than the original, and I love Bryan Adams. Adam was just chaotic for me this week, though he is number two, for me this week, with Allison third. I was disappointed with Matt, it was a strange version. Danny for the first time, I think might have trouble, Lil, and Kris just do not seem to have any other talent other than the ability to sing. How did your favorites do this week.

Wow Nasty Storms, Flooding, Satellites
I have been awake since 3:30 AM dealing with nasty rain, thunder, lightning, and wind. My husband, and kids pretty much slept through it, but my loving dog needed to sit on my lap, for six hours. I finally could just get back online, the wind kept knocking out the power. We have been in tornado watches, since last night. They finally ended for us, but it just came over the weather radio that one was spotted just south of here, in Pasco, and Lake county. We really did not need the 4 or 5 inches of rain, we got over night. All the local springs, Manatee, Hart, and Fanning are all flooding, as well as the Santa Fe, and Suwannee Rivers. They are not expected to crest until sometime Saturday. While we are not immediately close to any of these bodies of water, we do know people who are. It is a stressful kind of time.
Today for science we are covering Satellites. I came across this very cool website, that is free, and awesome. Check it out for all your space learning needs. Go here to check it out.

Easter, Entrecard, and Adgitize
I hope everyone had a happy Easter. Below are the pictures of my kids Easter morning, going to church. The bunny cake, came out good, it was nice and moist. I think he looks kind of psychotic, but kids wanted no candy on it, just frosting, so you can see my artistic abilities with frosting drawing.
I would like to talk about Entrecard, for a minute. I have been reading blogs, and contemplating all the issues surrounding Entrecard. First I would like to know if anyone knows how we can cash in credits. I read their blog which explained the algorithim of who was getting paid, in what order, but there was nothing about how to do it. If anyone knows I would love to know too. I have been using Entrecard for a full year, and for a full year, it was completely free. All they asked was for us to be supportive to Entrecard. Now they want to earn some money, and I can not see how I can fault them for that. Running a website is very expensive. At first I was kind of peeved, because basically we were putting paid ads on our blog, and they were making money off of us. No I do not think so. Then they said, we could earn a portion of the profits, Ok that would work for me. I am accepting paid ads, but they do have to be in the category of my blog. All three of my blogs, are doing that. As for the issue of those who use their credits to exchange advertising only, on others blogs, I do not think 50% of the advertising space is unfair. Since it is free, and I am a member of Entrecard, I can not find fault with this. I do not want to pay for advertising, so biting the hand that is giving me free advertising, simply does not make sense to me. Yes I do spend a great deal of time, doing Entrecard, but it is no more than time I would spend at other Social Networks, traffic exchanges or other advertising means, and not get nearly as good results as I have gotten with Entrecard. So that is my take on Entrecard. I am still waiting to see how they sell back option is going to work.
Now to Adgitize. I am actually quite adgitated with Adgitize. I was making an average of 6 cents per day, and did make payout. Now I am clicking more of the blogs, way more, and my earnings are down to 1-2 cents a day. This will not work for me, should it continue. As with any other program I am a member of, I will give it 30 days, re evaluate, and then probably leave. I do not know why the earnings has decreased so much, but since I am doing more work, it does not make me happy.

Two Rants About Education Issues
I am in a mood today, and I am going to take it out on two education topics, that have gotten under my skin.
1- While reading my local, very small town paper, I read about CNA graduates. A CNA, or certified nursing assistant, is a job that is difficult, and rewarding at the same time. It can be physically difficult, as well as mental. I have been working as a nurse, for the past 22 years, and I can not even begin to tell you how important a CNA is to a nurse. So what is my beef, you ask? It has now been decided, by some brilliant wonder, that you no longer have to be a high school graduate, or have a GED to take the CNA course. That is insane!! These people are dealing with elderly, handicapped, and sometimes critically ill people. Not having any kind of a formal educational background just makes it incredibly dangerous for the patient, the CNA, the nurse who is responsible for the CNA, and the facility that hires them. CNA's do not just take vital signs, and give baths anymore, they are increasingly expected to deal with complicated machines, and situations. As a nurse, I can not tell you how uncomfortable this makes me. I am not saying they can not do a good job, but when you are working in a profession, not McDonalds, how do you not require some kind of education. I will be addressing this with my local congressman, as I feel very deeply about this issue. One more thing, in a long list of things, that have disappointed me extremely about both the health care industry, and the state of Florida.
2- My second rant, is something I heard on the news, last night. The new Secretary of Education, that Obama appointed, wants to change the school week to six days a week, and a full year. What!, is he crazy. Number one, they have a hard enough time getting teachers now, this would only make it more difficult. Two many schools are in budget crunches already, and can not cover the current costs they have. Three why do we not want kids to be kids. Why not just put them in jail, and throw away the key. This is absurd, and I hope it does not happen. They thought No Child Left Behind was difficult, see what happens if this gets passed.
OK I am done ranting now. I hope everyone has a blessed Good Friday.

Goodbye To Scott, Playgroup Date
Just a quick post today, as I have a ton of stuff to do. Scott was voted off of American Idol, last night. It was sad, and I really liked him. He sang his song much better last night, without the distraction of the guitar, and 50% of the judges wanted to save him. But of course Simon did not feel he was worthy enough. I personally, thought Lil should go. She has no creativity to her performances, she just copy cat sings the songs. Anyway, I hope Scott does well, and I think he will.
I started a new playgroup for our area, and we are supposed to be meeting at the park to decorate Easter eggs. Both moms initially responded yes, but now have not confirmed, so I hope it goes off without a hitch.
Have a great day, everyone. Please remember about the new group for bloggers. It is called blogging for fun, on Yahoo groups, and it is to help bloggers support each other. You can join by entering your email address here

American Idol Top Eight : My Picks
This week American Idol's theme was the year they were born. I was a little disappointed with a lot of what they sang. I really like Scott, but the judges did not. My top three picks this week were, Adam, Allison, and Matt. Danny is just Ok for me, my son loves him though. I have to give hats off to Anoop also, as he continues to improve every week. I am not sure he can win, but I like him. Adam sang a song from Tears for Fear that I had never heard before, but it was awesome. Allison did a Bonnie Rait song, that I loved. Matt did some playing around with a classic Stevie Wonder song, and I thought it was fabulous. How did your favorites fare this week?

Easter Bunny Cake
My kids have decided this year for Easter, they want an Easter Bunny Cake, instead of candy. This works for me, as I am tweeking my baking skills anyway. I love to do the cakes, and learn to do them. I am not all that fancy, or anything. I found a very easy one to make here. I will not be using coconut, as my kids do not like it, but pastel colored sugar sprinkles to cover the bunny. Wish me luck I might need it. The rest of our Easter menu will include HAM. I stressed it, because my husband gave up pork, and red meat for Lent. I am proud of him, I did not think he would be able to do it. He will be rewarded with a thick, fat, juicy Ham for Easter dinner.

Wrestlemania 25
Last night was the 25th anniversary of Wrestlemania. It was my son's first time watching the wrestling event. My husband, and I both grew up watching wrestling, though I have not followed it in about 10 years. My son, who is almost 9, just started watching it with my husband. I am sure we explain to him how it is written, and not real, especially when they talk about story lines where brothers burn down their brothers house, and kill their dog. He found this very upsetting, especially since the bad brother won the match. I did not see a lot of sex, and trash this year, which is one of the reasons he has never watched it before. I screen it carefully, and my husband knows what he can see, and not see. He had a ball, and thoroughly enjoyed his boy, the Undertaker, beating my boy Shawn Michaels. I only watched parts of it, and I have to see it was good, not sure if it was worth 40 dollars, but Kidd Rock did put on an awesome show. I never knew they did rock concerts as a part of Wrestlemania. The one disappointment for me, was that the script did not write in for the Legends of wrestling to beat Jerricho, I thought that was very tacky. Hats off to the legends for even getting in the ring, with him. I think most of them are pushing 60. Did you watch it? What did you think?
We are on Spring Break this week, so no lesson plans will be posted until next week. Have a great Monday, everyone. Please note I will be adding the missing children widget at the end of each post, some of these kids have gone missing as early as today. Please look at it, and see if you can help.

Tyler Perry's The Family That Prays
Last night was movie night, for my husband, and I. I got The Family That Prays, from Netflix, completely thinking it was a comedy. This was definitely not a comedy, but a wonderful, touching story about friendship, love, and life. I can not tell you how much I enjoyed this movie. If you have not seen it, you might want to add it to your list.
This week is Spring Break, at Melissas Homeschool. Spring Break, is really not a break at all, but more in lines of spring cleaning. We will be going through my children's inventory of way too many toys, and preparing them for sale on Melissas Garage Sale. I really am going to work hard, online, to make a little extra money this next week. We have had some unexpected expenses, plus Easter, Mothers Day, and Caitlin's birthday next month. So I will be a busy little beaver, this week. Have a great Sunday, everyone.

I Am Looking For A Few Good Bloggers For Blog Support Group
I want to start a group, on Yahoo groups for bloggers, to support each other, leave comments, advice, tips etc. It is free, and open until 100 bloggers have joined. Once I get a few that are interested I will post the link to join the group. It will be easy, just go to the group, at least three times a week, view each blog listed, and leave a pertinent to the topic, comment. Easy, and everyone wins. You can also post topics for discussion on the group. If it gets to where only some people are participating, those that do not will be deleted. It will be capped at 100 blogs, so let me know if you are interested. Please comment me here, or on either of my other blogs, to let me know you are interested.
We are on Spring Break next week, so no lesson plans to post. Spring cleaning, to come.

And Now We Have Eight
The very beautiful, Megan Joy was voted off of American Idol, last night. That leaves us with 8 contestants left. I really like Megan. She has a unique voice, and look. I hope she does well. I was actually surprised that Matt survived the bottom three this week. I did not care for his song at all. Allison again made the bottom three. They made fun of her dress, and her hair, but she survived. Adam, and Danny were my top picks this week. Making it the top of my list, for the first time, is Kris. He sang beautifully, though I still find him a bit boring. How did your favorites do this week?
