4th Grade Reading List

Back to business for a few days. I finally decided on DJ's reading list for the fourth grade. Tomorrow, I will be posting on yearly evaluations, and portfolios. Then Wednesday will be letter of intent, and Florida laws. Then maybe back to some fun stuff. This post is for record keeping purposes, and anyone who would like some ideas on reading lists. DJ is an andvanced reader, and some of these may not fit all fourth grade readers.

Suggested Reading List for DJ 4th Grade 2009-2010 School Year:

Seeds of A Nation- Florida by Elizabeth Weis Vollstadt
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Hound of the Baskervilles by A Conan Doyle
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
Marco Polo by Manuel Komroff
The Young Winston Churchill by John Marsh
Heidi by Johanna Spyri
Black Beauty

I reserve the right to add, delete, or modify the list as needed, as long as I keep written record of all reading material.

Wonder if I can put my hands on my daughters list. She too was an advanced reader and always had a book in her hands. I see several on the list she read. She taught 5th grade the last 2 years. Let me know if you need any additional ideas.

Whats your son like to read, mystery, hystery, explore type?

I had a hard time picking this year, because I wanted to cover history in our reading, rather than worksheets.

the idea of you having the capability to choose the reading list seems great, you have more freedom which ones you think are best for learning.

It'll be interesting to read Sherlock Holmes and Marco Polo.I hope my 8-year old will be as interested as I am,lol. Is it hard to do homeschooling,Melissa? It's not that popular yet here in the Philippines. Some parents, who are not into it,argue that the kids' social skills could be jeopardized.Homeschooling parents believe otherwise and they actually see a lot of benefits in teaching their own kids at home.

I find I get a lot of people who are not from the states, that tell me homeschooling is either not allowed, or not known about in their countries. I can see where a child could be easily unsocialized, if allowed to happent, but there is no reason for that. I started our own playgroup, can be homeschool or not, and it is still growing.
