Fun Friday The Letter N: Naughty Nurses, and The Nose Knows

No, there are no naughty nurse stories here, just trying to get your attention. Did it work? Today is Fun Friday at my Blogging for Fun group. We are working on an A-Z meme, and we are up to the letter N. Of course I have to pick, not literally, something medical related, the Nose. The nose is a very sensitive organ, and can detect smells that are lovely, and offensive. The video below is cool, and will show you the anatomy of your nose. Here are some interesting, and funny facts I found out about the nose.

1- Did you know that your nasal membranes, in your nose, produce anywhere from a pint to a quart of snot a day, which is usually swallowed and digested by acids in the stomach. Yummo!

2- 1/3 of adult Americans pick their nose. Gross I wonder how many kids do then?

3- When we smell the molecules carrying the odor arrive in the nose and bind to receptors on a dime-sized patch of tissue at the top of the nose called the olfactory epithelium. These receptors make connections with neurons in the olfactory bulbs, two cylinders located directly behind the gap between the eyebrows. From there, impulses are relayed to the brain's limbic system, as well as the hippocampus, which is thought to encode the information into memory.

4- Do you know how sinuses were discovered, I don't know if this is true, or an old wives tale, but a woman had a tooth removed, and stuck a pin in the hole. Why on earth would she do that. Anyway the pin disappeared, and she thought it went to her brain. However her doctor discovered it was just stuck, in grape like clusters of cavities, behind the face, aka the sinuses. This was in the 17th century.

Hi Melissa, I am one of the sensitive person with regards to smell. Would you believe I am allergic to perfumes?

Hehehe, now I know where the term snotty comes from.

Your posts are always very informative.
