One of the things my son will be learning, in 3rd grade, is the history of communication. I spent countless hours, trying to find material for a 3rd grader, to cover this topic. It was not included in the 3rd grade history book I purchased. Anyway after spending alot of time searching, I was finally able to find several options. If this is part of your curriculum this year, check them out, and use them at your will. They are all free.

Not sure what communication topics will be covered in third grade, but I would label Alexander Graham Bell and the telephone more a communication technology topic. This from a retired University Professor of Communication. Good luck. Lots of directions this could go--such as how people learn to speak or the history of language (the alphabet, writing, etc.).
For 3rd grade, it is more geared to how communication changed the world. Such as the telegraph, telephone, etc. It isnt too involved, just the basics of different inventions that effected how we communicate. I am very glad to see I spelled comminication incorrectly lol. I better go fix it.
