The Beautiful Angler Fish!

Wow you would have to really have to believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for this scary fish.  Tomorrow is our Earth Kids meeting, and Faith chose the Angler Fish.  Below are links to the reading and worksheets we will be doing.  Because I could not find ocean theme math for the older kids, I used TLSbooks.  There is also a Geography page where they will be identifying what level of the ocean the Angler Fish would live in.  Do you know?  We also are doing an Angler Fish bird feeder using upcycled materials.  I will share those, and how we did it, after they have been completed. Oh, and I almost forgot, for lunch, I am making Angler Fish theme sandwiches.  I can not wait to see how these come out.  For such a hideous fish, they truly are fascinatingly unique.  It has been a good, and productive week, here at Melissa's Homeschool.  I am off this weekend, so we will be having some family fun.  Hopefully there will be pictures to share.

I am somewhat disappointed because I found some awesome sheets on Teacherspayteachers, that I could not print because I used pdf files not Microsoft Office.  Since I have no intentions of getting Microsoft Office, I am really glad I did not pay for something I could not use. 

Earth Kids for 2013/2014

Today was the official end of our first year of Earth Kids. We made our butterfly feeders, made butterfly cookies and then voted and decided on next year. The kids decided they want to study oceans and ocean animals. I already have a project book on Marine Biology from 4H, so that works out awesome. Plus, I found this website, with tons of great ocean themed items.  She has put a lot of time into her ocean themed unit study.  It incorporates Math and Geography, not just the Science of oceans.  Love it.  We switched up our meeting times.  The 5 PM time slot just was not working well, and definitely will be very hard on me in the very near future.  So we decided we would meet at 11 AM on one Tuesday, and then a Friday, so twice a month.  The kids want to do some hiking, nature walks, visit a pond, visit a zoo and aquarium, visit the springs some more, crafts, painting and photography.  So, I think they decided on some pretty fun activities.  We are taking August off, and will start back up in September.  I can't wait!

Movie Friday: Oceans and Legend of the Guardians

Since we are almost at the end of the school year, and both kids have completed some of their curriculums, we use Fridays as movie day. Last week we watched most of Oceans, and will watch the last 30 minutes shortly. Then Caitlin picked Legend of the Guardians, which will be watched immediately after Oceans. Do you have laid back relaxing, fun days in your homeschooling adventures? It makes for a nice school week, if you ask me.

Lewis and Clark Video, Oceans

Tomorrow is our first day back to school. Below are three great videos. Lewis, and Clark, we are starting a series on explorers. We already did Davey Crockett. Then the longer video is on Oceanography. We probably will not get the whole video in, in one day, but in a couple of days. It will depend on how we progress through newer, harder math.

Field Trip To Shired Island on The Gulf Of Mexico, Madagascar 2

Friday November 7th, was our Ocean Field trip, to Shired Island. Shired Island, is on the Gulf of Mexico, and about 1 hr from our home. It is sort of secluded and quiet, and as you can see from the pictures, a beautiful place to visit. It was 80 degrees, with no wind or clouds, absolutely perfect for a field trip. Because we went about an hour after high tide, there were tons of sea shells to pick. They are soaking in bleach water, to use for crafts. We did not get to see any Horseshoe Crabs, which are usually abundant, at this location. We did see some Blue Crabs, that had been caught, in a trappers cage. They were young ones, and can get to the size of dinner plates. We saw lots of birds, a small jelly fish, some fish, and some small crabs. The Pelican was camera shy and would not let me get a picture of it. All in all, it was a great day.

Yesterday, we went to go see Madagascar 2 Escape to Africa. It was cute, and Caitlins first trip to the big movie theater. She was good, until all her snacks were gone, and then she wanted to go home. I still think the first one was better, but this one was good too.
