Fun Friday: The Magnolia Tree

Today is Friday, that means it is Fun Friday, at my Blogging For Fun group. We have started a new eight Friday series on trees. They can pick any tree they want, as long as they don't do the same one twice. DJ, and I will be focusing on trees that grow in Florida. I am starting with the Magnolia Tree. We have three of these beautiful trees in our yard, and they smell, and look beautiful. The pics are ones that DJ took last year, when they were in bloom. Here are some facts about the Magnolia tree.

* Magnolia trees are named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.
* Magnolia trees can grow in Asia, N America, S America, C America, and the West Indies.
* There are actually many different species, and subspecies of the main Magnolia species.
* The bark of Magnolia trees has been used in natural medicines to help cure anxiety.
* The Magnolia flower is the state flower of both MS, and LA, and MS is the Magnolia State.
* The Giant Leopard Moth uses the Magnolia tree as food.

The History Of Florida

One of the places I plan to go is the History of Florida Museum in Tallahassee. At the beginning of this school year, DJ, and I both read a book about the history of Florida. There is so much to remember, and unless you have a photographic memory, it is impossible to remember it all. Because we are originally from NY, I of course like my children to learn about the history of NY, as well. The short video below goes through the museum, and gives some highlights of the history of Florida. I found several others with different info, that I will add for my own use, and anyone else who has an interest in learning about the history of Florida.

Oil Leak In The Gulf Of Mexico

I don't know how many of you follow the news, but last week there was an oil rig, that had an explosion, and fell into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil well is currently leaking 40,000 gallons per day, into the Gulf. We like many people love the Gulf, and we were just there a month ago. They are trying to contain the leak, but with no success, and it appears by the end of this weekend, the oil will start to reach the coast of Florida. This is not only an environmental disaster for all the living things in the Gulf, but the many thousands of people who count on fishing, and tourism for their livelihoods. This is just awful.

Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes Review

Tomorrow for Social Studies we are reviewing our lesson on plate tectonics, and earthquakes. These are two new videos on plate tectonics, for you to share with your children, or students. We hopefully will be having a playdate at the springs, or the park tomorrow afternoon. It is kind of up in the air right now. My roses are going crazy, and have tons of blooms. My hydrangea, well lets just say I don't have much hope for it. My tomatoes have flowers already, and the cukes are moving right along. The kids help water, and feed them on the days we have no rain, which trust me has been a lot lately.

What Makes An Insect An Insect?

A quick note to everyone, first. If you have slightly high cholesterol, or are borderline being high, don't rush into taking a Statin drug such as Zocor. Try increasing your fiber first. Some of you may remember six months ago, I had my cholesterol checked, and it was just a couple points high. They wanted me to start right away taking Zocor. I opted to modify my diet, and increase my fiber intake first. Today my cholesterol went down a whole ten points, and the other markers are now again normal, with the exception of one. I take three fiber capsules, not the tablets, with my dinner time meal. The increased fiber also will absorb some of the fat you eat, and help you lose weight too. If your cholesterol is really high, you can still do this, along with medication from your doctor, and then use the fiber to maintain once you have gotten it down.

Tomorrow we are reviewing our insect lesson plan. Specifically what makes an insect, an insect. The video below is cute, and will help you, or children learn. There are other videos on insects, in the archives, if you are interested in more. DJ just finished Black Beauty, which is the last book on his reading list for fourth grade. I will be having him, and Caitlin watch the movie soon.

Doctor Appointments, and Hail

This is the first time since we have lived in Florida, that we have experienced Hail. We had some nasty thunder storms move through today, the rain was much needed, and we had marble sized hail at one point. The kids thought it was pretty cool, I was glad we have a garage. I did get a picture, but I am not sure how good it came out. If it is good, I will share it. I think I will have DJ do some research on hail, and why it is formed. Tomorrow I go to the Dr just for a follow up on my migraines, so school will start a little later than normal. Oh I almost forgot tonight on the History Channel, is a new series called The History of US, be sure to tivo it if it is something you would be interested in learning about.

Corn Snake On My Gas Tank Ugh!!!

My husband was doing yard work this morning, and what do you think he found? Yes, that is right, another snake, and yet another breed of snake. I seriously think I have to move. I grew up in rattle snake country, and never once saw a snake, for 35 years, not even one. I have lived here almost three years, in this house, in the town, and have seen five snakes, all different. So while my husband, and kids were staring at it, trying to decide what it was, I was standing on the porch yelling at them to get away from it, and waving my hands all around. Can you hear me hyperventilating? It seems it is a corn snake, which supposedly is very harmless. Harmless, it can still bite can't it? This is not the actual one, I couldn't think straight enough to get the camera, but I did get the pleasure of looking at it, and this is what it looked like. It was the slowest moving snake I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. Even after poking it with a stick, it just moseyed along like it owned the place. So now I have to walk around my own yard with a big stick, or hammer, just to go in the back yard. I thought having dogs was supposed to ward the snakes off. Whoever told me that, was so wrong. I even got a second dog, and the snakes still come to my yard. I think they know I don't like them, and they all sit around laughing at me. Ms Laura, and Ms Kristy I know you are laughing at me. Ugh!!!!!!

Fun Friday Letter Z: Zandrite Color Change Gemstone

Today is Fun Friday, and we are at the end of our A-Z meme. If you know your alphabet then you know that means we are at Z. Since DJ wanted to do Zebra, I was unsure of what I should do. Then I remembered about this wonderful simulated gemstone called Zandrite, and my Zandrite comes with a story.

Six years ago when we were saving every dime we had, so we could move to Florida the following year, JTV had this new stone that intrigued me. Not only was it a 100 percent color change gemstone, but it was affordable too. If you know about gems, then you know natural color change gems are extremely expensive, and very rarely ever have 100 percent color change to them. This was the first time they had this stone, and were offering it at amazing prices, and it came with 14k gold earring settings, to make your own earrings. I couldn't resist, and I bought them. I wore those earrings almost every day for three years, I loved them. Then we got our crazy puppy, and he needed his nails trimmed. My husband, and I figured we could both handle cutting a puppies nails. Ha, while trying to hold him he ate the Zandrite earring right out of my ear. I pried his mouth open, and confiscated my earring. The setting was ruined, but I was able to save the stone. So I had two loose stones. I placed one in a ring, that I thought I had a picture of, but I can't find it, and the other is waiting to find a jewelry setting home. Zandrite is a man made, or simulated gemstone, it does not occur naturally in nature. There are two varieties the ruby by day, and emerald by night to simulate an Alexandrite, and a beautiful purple to cobalt blue stone, which is my personal favorite. The video below shows very nicely to color changes, and the beauty of this stone. If you were born in the month of June, then Alexandrite is your birthstone. If you can not afford, or even find, a genuine Alexandrite, you might want to look at Zandrite jewelry. It is really lovely.

Happy Earth Day!!

It is Earth day today, and while I could discuss some very controversial topics, I have decided to keep it light, and beautiful. Below is pictures of Earth from space. I hope you enjoy it.

We moved our cukes into the ground today, and our tomatoes have been planted as well. The peppers are taking their sweet time. We also planted seed pods that fell from our tree, that Caitlin confiscated. It is always a habit of ours to conserve water, and power, so those are ingrained in our brains already. If I could run my computer by candlelight, we could save even more power LOL.

A while ago my mom gave the kids some sand dollars. I have been holding onto them wondering what to do with them, until now. Caitlin actually came up with the idea that we should paint pictures on them, and make decorations. So we will be doing that, sometime this weekend. I will be sure to share pictures of how they come out. If you don't know the beautiful story of the sand dollar, the video will help you.

Free Speech And Dog Fighting

I am a firm believer in free speech. It is one of the great things about this country. However, I have to say the Supreme Court did not make any sense to me yesterday, when they ruled that taping, and distributing dog fighting matches was considered free speech, and therefore protected under the Constitution.

I am sorry but the last time I checked dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states. If you are taping the event, and then distributing it for profit, or pleasure that would make you an accessory, or accessory after the fact, according to our own laws. An accessory either encourages an illegal act, has knowledge of an illegal act, or tries to cover up an illegal act. Would that not include taping dog fighting acts then either selling those tapes, or in any way sharing them with others? I thought the Supreme Court was supposed to interpret the law. This makes absolutely no sense to me, and why would they want to protect something so disgusting. Can you tape a rape, murder, or child molestation, and distribute as free speech, and be protected from the law? Of course not, that would make you an accessory to the crime, punishable under the law. This was a mistake, I think, on the part of the Supreme Court of this great country.

The Return Of The Dreaded Migraines!

I have not had a migraine since November of 2009. I was having them every other week, so even this is a great improvement. This morning I woke with a headache, that quickly became a migraine. While I hate to use the Relpax unless I have to, it makes me drowsy, I really did not have a choice. The waves of nausea, light, and sound sensitivity were unbearable. Relpax works very quickly, but now I am left extremely tired. Needless to say we did not have any school today. All lessons will be made up in the coming days. I forgot to add two things to todays lessons. The rotting log experiment, week two, and DJ, and Caitlin will be both drawing an animal habitat. Tomorrow we will be reviewing latitude, and longitude. I took a worksheet from a workbook that I bought for next year. It explains it very easily, and the graphics are great. The video below helps as well, so be sure to use it as you need.

Animal Classification Review

Tomorrow we start our review for Science class. We have to go all the way back to the beginning of the year, and we first started with animal classification. This is sometimes confusing to children, and adults. There is a lot of information to remember. The two videos below help simplify it, and can be used for young children learning animal habitats, like Caitlin.

I am glad it is a new week, last week was kind of stinky. Why does everything happen at once, anyways? Is there some reason stinkiness can't be stretched out over months, rather than it all happening at once? Life is funny sometimes, that is for sure. Of course my stinky week does not compare at all to all those poor people stranded for five days due to the volcano erupting in Iceland, or the many earthquakes people have been experiencing over the last several months.

How To Draw Potted Plants

Well my printer has died, so I have to improvise until the end of the year for some of our work. In honor of Earth Day, this week DJ is learning how to draw potted plants. The video is short, and shows you how to do it. For about half of the year, DJ has been doing timed math tests, on Fridays. After reviewing this, I do not find this helpful to him at all. Because he wants to finish in the allotted time, he is making careless mistakes. Though I will still probably do the timed tests, it will not be as frequent, and I think I am going to add more time. Three minutes just does not seem reasonable to me for the harder math he has learned. DJ is moving into liquid volume in math, and the video below can be used as a tool with your other math lessons.

Fun Friday The Letter Y: Yellow Gemstones

I am a gemstone geek. I have been collecting loose gemstones for about 7 years. I got so many, I had to decide what to do with them. So I started making jewelry. At first for me, then family, and friends. Now it is a small business for me through an online store. I sell about one piece a month, certainly not millionaire status, but at least others are enjoying them as much as I do.

There are quite a few gemstones that can be yellow in color. Citrine is probably the most well known yellow gemstone on the market today. There is also yellow diamonds, yellow labradorite, bytownite, yellow tourmaline, yellow beryl, lemon quartz, as well as yellow jade, pearls, and I am sure there are others. Yellow very often signifies warmth, compassion, and friendship. It is one of the loveliest colors of gemstones.

Gemstone collecting has been fun for my kids as well. They look at them under the microscope, and with the loupe. They are fascinated by the many different varieties that Mother Nature provides each, and every day. I am starting to learn to identify my stones. Some I know what they are because they were bought already identified. When you buy large parcels, very often you don't know for sure what they are. Learning to identify your stones is very time consuming, and you really need to practice a lot. I love it!

How To Master A Job Interview

Today I am doing something a little bit different. A lot of people are out of work, looking for work. Maybe you have left a job you have had for many years, and need a new one. Maybe you have been a stay at home parent, and need to rejoin the work force. No matter which describes you having a good interview can help you get the job over someone else. Here are some great tips for job interviews to keep in mind.

1- Do not arrive too early, or too late for the interview. If you are not sure of where the place is go a day ahead so you know where you are going. Arrive about 10 minutes early to give time for any paperwork you might have to fill out.

2- When filling out the application, don't lie about your experience. Chances are you will be found out, and even if you get the job may be let go. Always be honest, and say if you need help in a particular area, but that you are very willing, and able to learn.

3- If you smoke, or like perfume, you might want to avoid both. Cigarette smells, or loud perfume can be a turn off to the interviewer. Of course you don't want to smell like BO either, so be clean, and conservative with colognes, and perfumes.

4- Make sure you are dressed appropriately. Take into account the job you are applying for, and do a little research online to see what kind of company it is. Generally speaking simple dress attire will be just right, without too much distracting accessories. Keep it neat, and simple, and don't forget to iron them. If you don't know how, learn.

5- Don't put your sunglasses on your head, or your Ipod around your neck, leave it in the car, along with your cell phone or at least turn it off.

6- During the interview don't badmouth former bosses, or coworkers. This will just make you look hostile, and can't get along with others. Be honest but don't be overly negative. All of us have people we might not be able to get along with, just don't be nasty.

7- Be enthusiastic, and confident. Ask about the company, how they relate to their workers, benefits, expectations of you for your position. Ask about wages, but not right away. Above all be prepared to answer questions they might ask. Like why do you want to work here? Don't just say because I need a job. Maintain good eye contact, and don't act cocky.

Area And Perimeter, Mother Nature Network

We are moving into area, and perimeter for math class. If you have a child in the fourth or fifth grade, then you have probably heard, or seen them doing this. The video below will help you, and your child learn area, and perimeter. It really is not that hard once you get it down. I have read the whole math textbook for fifth grade, I know I get bored sometimes, and I think we are good for the next school year. I am feeling very comfortable.

I want to share a website that I love with you. Mother Nature Network has all kinds of information to help you teach about nature, green living, and loving planet earth. If you join their newsletter, it is free, they will send you all kinds of cool stuff each week. I try to remember to post them all, but I frequently forget, so if you sign up I won't have to worry about forgetting.

Time For Review

My lesson plans may seem boring from here on out, as a lot of what we will be doing is reviewing what we have already learned through out the year. I may start some harder math, and Caitlin is doing nouns this week. She has not yet covered that, so this is new for her. I plan on reviewing every Science, History, and Health assignment we did. DJ got behind on his reading Friday, so his assignments for Monday will be mostly reading, and summaries. We will also be trying to add in our I can play piano lessons for the remainder of the year. We have not had time up until this point. Caitlin has completed her reading list, so she will be picking two books from the list to re read each day.

Lesson Plans For 04/12/10:

Beautiful Flowers And Vegetables

Well my green thumb is not doing too bad this year, so far. My flowers always do well, as you can see by the lilies, which we just planted this past week. The cucumbers are the fastest growers, and the peppers, and onions are coming along too. The only ones taking their time is the tomatoes. I am hoping for a successful vegetable garden this year, I mean I can not eat my beautiful flowers, but they grow awesome. I just bought fertilizer, and now everything smells like manure, but if it helps I can live with it. The kids love doing the little garden every year, and it is a simple, and affordable Science project, though we have never gotten an A, LOL. I hope everybody is having a wonderful Saturday.

Who Should Be Responsible When Children Bully To Death?

This is a topic that all parents should be interested in. I really got thinking about this when I heard the other day about a 15 year old girl who committed suicide after being bullied at school. Bullying is probably not the appropriate term, in my mind, it was more like harassment, cruelty, and just plain hatefulness. This girl moved from Ireland, to some place in MA. She began to date a boy on the football team. The ex girlfriend of the football player, and her friends immediately targeted this girl. The relentlessly started nasty untrue rumors about her, along with other incessant bully tactics. With the internet, and text messaging this girl reportedly had no escape. The second case I heard about was a boy in Tampa took his own life after he was bullied at school. He even changed to a different school, and the offender followed him to that school so the bullying could continue. Obviously these are extreme cases, but if no one puts a stop to it, this is what it can lead to. So my question is who is responsible, and accountable to stop bullying? Why as a society do we feel bullying is just part of being a kid, and the growing up experience? I have heard lots of people actually say that, so I am not just pulling it out of the air. Also, I have seen teachers, and parents who look the other way when these things happen not only at school, but in public places. When did society become so cruel, that we just look the other way, or maybe it has always been that way? Now these are my thoughts on what to do about bullying.

1- Obviously awareness, and education is always at the top of my list.
2- Children are the ones that should be accountable for their actions. These children mentioned above were 17, and 18 years old, with the exception of the boy who was 15. 17, and 18 is close to being considered an adult. There is no reason you should not be held accountable for the things you do. Harassment at the very least should be the charge considered, and probably stalking in the cases I mentioned. I would never want a child to have a ruined life, but when do we tell children they simply must be accountable for their own actions? All these slaps on the wrist, because we don't want it to affect their future really just is not working, and is really unfair to the children they targeted.
3- As for teachers they are culpable if they know it is occurring, and choose to look the other way. Schools need policies that hold children accountable for their actions on school property, and then it has to be enforced. It has to be known that doing these things can affect your future to get into college, maybe even get a job, if you can't get along with others. Of course it has to be a tiered level thing. Not all bullying is the same, but we have seen it certainly can escalate into things everyone is sorry for.
4- As for parents, again you are responsible for knowing what your children are texting, and doing on their computers. You are technically responsible for your children, until the age of 18. You can be sued, in a civil court, if someone decided to do so. Is it worth it? Of course you can not watch your children all the time, or know what they do when they are with their friends, but good communication, and monitoring the things you can, might put a stop to all this nonsense. Most importantly setting a good example. Children learn what they see, and what they live.

We all have to live with the decisions we make in life. If you were hateful, vengeful, or just plain cruel to someone or something, on a regular every day basis, you have to live with that. Is it worth it in the end, maybe reminding yourself every day of the things you have done to others is the ultimate punishment in the end. Living with what you have done.

Tell me what you think on this topic. I want to know what people think, and how you think it can be stopped, or if it should be stopped. Some people seem to think this is just part of growing up, and being a child. I disagree. Sometimes doing the right thing is the hardest thing to do.

I don't have a lot to say today. I know it is hard to believe. Below is another nursery rhyme for all your young kids to enjoy. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is the name, and I am sure you are most aware of it. DJ has completed his language arts book, and is on his last reading book.

How The States Got Their Shapes, Science Experiments At Home

My goodness I have quite a few things I want to share with you today. Have you ever wondered why the states have the very interesting shapes that they have? Now you can find out, by viewing the video below, it is long I am warning you. History channel is also having an episode covering this tonight, at 8PM, and again at 1AM. I was contacted by a young lady who has started a new blog. While her blog is about phlebotomy, she sent me an awesome link called 52 awesome science experiments you can do at home. A Rotten Log Experiment, and Seeds

While doing my blog hopping one day, I came across a really cool website called The Dinner Garden. This site promotes growing your own garden, to help end hunger. They will send you free seeds, upon request. If you can donate to their site to help cover shipping, they do appreciate it. Their requests have gone way up this year. If you have a large bounty, the idea is that you will share your bounty with those in need. I think it is a great concept.

As promised here is the rotten log experiment. First we had to find a rotten log to place somewhere in our yard. We did that, and it has been placed. You have to leave it in the same place, and make observations for the next month, or more. Please make sure your husband is aware not to move it so he can mow there ahem Craig. Then you discuss what your students think will happen to the log. Will it disappear into the ground, do nothing, rot more, what? What about underneath, and other living things? DJ and Caitlin decided it would indeed rot more, bugs would eat it, and bugs or other critters would live in, and on it. When I asked them what they thought about under the log, neither were real sure. So that is what we will be investigating. Be sure to check at least once a week, and discuss your findings, and observations. This is a cheap, like free, and fun Science experiment that anyone can do.

The video below can be for all age ranges. DJ will be using tomorrow for Science to cover deserts, and Caitlin will be using it for her desert habitat lesson.

We have already been reviewing spelling, and vocabulary. If anyone noticed I forgot to tell you about the log experiment, it will be posted tomorrow. Fun Friday The Letter W: Water

Welcome to Fun Friday, at our Blogging For Fun group. We are back to working on our A-Z meme, and are up to the letter W. W is for water. Below you will find interesting facts about water, and some lovely pics my brother in law took, while here on vacation. Did you know you can go a long time without food, and still survive, but after 24 hours of no water your body will start to slowly die. We need water to survive, as do plants, and wild life. It is precious. If you would like to join our Blogging for Fun group simply use the sign up widget on the left hand column of this blog.

Facts about water:
1 About 70% of the human body is made up of water.
2 When you are born, almost 80% of your body is water, that is why babies dehydrate so easily.
3 If you drink too much water, too fast, water intoxification can occur. Yes, even good things can be bad for you.
4 You should consume at least eight cups of water per day. But did you know not all of that has to be drinkable. Most foods, contain small amounts of water that help meet this requirement.
5 Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid does.
6 About 75% of the Earths surface is covered in water.
7 In the US we use about 346,000 gallons of water per day
8 Flushing the toilet is actually the biggest consumer of water every day
9 By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be dehydrated, losing 1 percent of your water. Stay hydrated.
10 The initial weight you lose, when dieting, or exercising is water weight, not fat.

I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. Stay safe, and drink your water.
