Hotchalk One Cool Website

All right this is one cool website. I will be sharing some of my favorites, and new ones I have found, while we are on Christmas break. I actually found Hotchalk three years ago, when we first started to homeschool. But I forgot about it, and now it is a huge website with tons of stuff, and it is all free. You do not have to homeschool to use it, matter of fact it is for all teachers and students alike to use. I love the lesson plan and curriculum page, they have some very creative ideas for teaching different subjects. Check it out, and take advantage of this awesome resource. If this particular website does not suit your needs, check my archives, and the links at the bottom of the blog. I am sure you will find something you love.

Biomes: Life In The Grasslands

Tomorrow for Science class DJ is starting Biomes, which is basically a fancy way of saying animal habitats. This will be an easy four weeks for him, because he can probably teach it. Tomorrow's biome is the Grasslands. The video below is for him and his sister to watch. Use it and enjoy it in your lessons. Caitlin is doing insects and the Grasslands. Since the first is on Wednesday I will be sharing our two new ideas for Advent Calendars for the 25 days of Christmas. Be sure to check back, I am ultra frugal, so anyone can make these.

Verbs Helping and Linking

Well I am glad this very busy week is beginning anew. I am ready to get some school time in. If you have a child that is learning about verbs, including linking and helping verbs, then a quick review video could be helpful to you. I try to review grammar lessons already learned frequently, because quite frankly they are easy to forget. Caitlin will be beginning her Winter season door tomorrow by making snowflakes. This is a simple craft, that all kids love to do.

Division, Long Division, Division With Remainders

These are four videos to help your child learn long division. DJ is being challenged right now with two digit by three or more digit division. He can two by two with no problem. I hope the videos will explain it a little better. It starts with level one and goes to four, so there is something for all levels. This gentleman talks a lot, but once he gets going it is good.

Desert Plants and Animals

Tomorrow we only have a half day of school, and a good part of it is History and Math. The video below is quite long, but suits the needs of both of my children. We have been traveling around the world, learning about different countries. We are currently on Mexico, and tomorrow they are learning about the Mexican peso, and plants and animals of the desert. Since I couldn't find a video directly on Mexican deserts I chose this one because it is NM and AZ, close enough to Mexico. Plus Caitlin is learning about animals, and habitats, so this suits her needs as well. I will be doing a review on a cool dog book tomorrow, so be sure to check for that. If you have cable be sure to record History Channel's show on Thanksgiving, it is very good. We will also be making Native American shirts and dresses, to be worn on Thanksgiving Day. If you buy a plain white Tshirt then cut the bottom and sleeves to make fringe, then let your kids paint and design them you can have Indians for dinner too. The hats are easy. Just measure around your child's head then cut construction paper to correct length. Glue or tape to fasten. Then either make a feather, or print one off and fasten to the headband. Then we bought some big bold jewelry to go with the outfit. The kids are excited about this, and I will share pictures.

The Cardiovascular System

Today is Health class and we are discussing hazards in the home, and how to fix and prevent them. Plus DJ is doing the cardiovascular system. You can use the educational video below as an adjunct to your lessons. We finished our ice sculpture, which was nothing fancy, and is quickly melting in the 75 degree weather. I will post pictures soon. There are only 51 days until Christmas, WOW!

History Of Halloween

If you have a child in elementary school, then you know a big part of their education is about our American holidays. While Halloween is not what I define as a holiday it is celebrated like one. The video below explains the history of Halloween. Both my kids will watch this, and then just a short discussion. We are also continuing with our learning of places around the world and Canada is our current topic. To see some cool videos about Canada you can find them in my archives. We will be making a Canadian flag tomorrow, and finishing up with other facts about Canada. DJ also has his other history lessons. By the way anyone who didn't read on my Facebook page DJ got elected to be club photographer at his very first 4H meeting. He is very excited. It was a beautiful day at the park for our playdate today. I love the weather this time of year.

Making Scented Oil

OK so tomorrow is Social Studies, but we are only having a half day, because we are having our playdate at the park after lunch. We are up to Chapter 4 of Ancient Times and a lot of this chapter has to deal with embalming and mummifying of the dead. One of the activities you could choose to do was to mummify a chicken! Um, Um, Hmm, no I don't think I am doing that one. We could also make fancy jars, but I opted out of more painting for now. So that left us scented oil which is actually kind of neat. In ancient times they used oils and spices on the deceased bodies to help preserve the body. If you want to make some scented oil you will need a jar with a lid, oil either cooking or baby, and any spices you like. Fill the jar to the top with the spices, this will take a lot of spices, so I got a smaller jar LOL, then add the oil to the top to completely coat the spices. Set in a sunny location for a week, and shake the jar well two to three times a day. Then drain the oil and repeat the steps if you want a stronger scent. Then you can use the spices for embalming, well no please don't do that.

For tomorrows lessons Caitlin will be doing online computer games, and DJ has his Chapter 4 Ancient Times, plus he must do his math and spelling.

The Father Of Genetics: Mendel

Tomorrow for Science class we are up to our third week, out of four, of the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle curriculum. DJ will also be doing a piece on Gregor Mendel the Father of Genetics. This will be his first time going into detail about genetics. The first video below is suited towards younger learners, while the second video is more advanced. I messed up our weather tracking, so I will be restarting it with just the temp and pressure in the AM, then the temp and pressure in the PM. The jist of the experiment is supposed to show that as the pressure rises the temp goes down.

Chew It Up!

Tomorrow is health class, and we are studying teeth. The cute cat video below is for younger learners learning to brush properly. The other two are for older learners that need to learn more info about teeth. I thought this simple experiment, which I will share with you, makes a good point to kids about taking care of all their teeth.

You will need: Your child, and a piece of fruit or raw vegetable. Have your child place the food in their mouth and chew it using only their front teeth, no back teeth. Then discuss why the back teeth are so important to chewing and digesting your food. Digestion starts in the mouth. If you don't chew your food well enough then you most likely won't digest it very well either. Discuss that your front teeth are more for biting, and tearing of food, while your back teeth are for grinding, and chewing the food down into smaller particles. Have your child think about if they had no back teeth. How easy would it be to eat certain foods?

Do You Have Tons Of Old And Broken Crayons?

If you have children, then the answer is probably yes! Now you can recycle reuse those crayons. We are on week two of our Science lesson about reduce, recycle, and reuse. Below the video will show how in ten minutes you can use all those unwanted crayons, making new and exciting colors of crayons.

Teaching Addition To First Graders

There are several methods that you can teach addition to a young child. You can use blocks, beads, pennies, number lines, and a variety of other methods. One thing I have noticed in my watching of several videos is that they never seem to address the issue that the child needs to know that the + sign means to add, and the = sign is what the two number combined will make. If they don't understand the symbol they will just memorize whatever you show them, yet never really learn that they are adding two things together. The video below will show a variety of methods you can use to help your child learn addition. Caitlin was very successful with the number line method, and we will use that again this next year, along with flash cards for memorization.

Teaching Subject and Predicate

A complete sentence must have a subject and a predicate, to be a complete sentence. The subject is the noun part of the sentence, and the predicate is the verb part of the sentence. This cute video sings a nifty little song to help children remember what the subject and predicate of sentences means. Enjoy, and have a happy Wednesday!

Commas, Colons, and Semicolons

Moving on with some more fun grammar topics. Grammar the most unpleasant lesson for me to teach my children. For one thing it is so boring and so much to remember. Anyways enough whining, watch the video below to catch up on all your grammar needs.

We have had a crazy busy week and I think I am all socialized out. I still have to get portfolios together for next Tuesdays evaluation. At least I have gotten almost all of our books ordered, and curriculums lined up for next year. I hope everyone is having a great week, this week so far. Can you believe it is June 2nd already, ugh where did the year go?

Learning With Lapbooks and Learning Centers

If your child attends public school you are probably already familiar with learning centers. They are centers set up with a goal oriented lesson, and all the activities that would accompany that topic. I think they are great and Evan Moor sells some very nice ones. However, I don't have room to have all the learning centers I would need to have in one school year.

That brings me to lapbooks. Now I have never made one of these, but I really like them. We will be trying one of these for Caitlin next year, for animals. To me they are kind of like a themed unit study that you put together in a book format, that your child can read over numerous times to learn the material needed to understand the topic. A big part of first grade centers around dinosaurs, and several different types of animals. At the bottom of this blog you will find a website that is dedicated completely to dinosaurs for kids. You can use it as you need to help with a dinosaur lapbook. Here are some websites I found that give you ideas how to make lapbooks, and the supplies you would need for different topics.

Teaching The Metric System

Yuck, who likes to learn the metric system? Not me, and it isn't much fun trying to teach it either. Thank goodness for all of you, I have scoured the internet to find free, and fun resources for you to teach, and or learn the metric system. The video below of course kids will find more fun, than just reading or working on problems. I also found a website with tons of metric system resources all in one convenient place. You can find it by clicking right here. Kids don't really get into the metric system too deeply until sixth grade. But I find, with any math, introducing it early, and working at it helps by the time you actually have to learn it.

Climate Change For Kids, Free Physics Experiments

OK, here we go with another Monday. Next year we are doing an in depth lesson plan on green living, climate change, and renewable energy. The simple, and cute video below is a cute place to start to introduce climate change to your children.

We are not yet studying physic, but this next source will come in handy in a few years. It is free Physics experiments you can do at home, and you can download it now to use in the future. London Bridge Is Falling Down, Animal Habitat Frogs

One of the things I have really put off with Caitlin, as part of her kindgarten curriculum, is nursery rhymes. I really don't care for nursery rhymes, so I have been putting it off. All this week, since we are on vacation, I am compiling nursery rhyme videos for when we start again. The first one is London Bridge is Falling Down. Also, Caitlin has finished her animal book, so now she will start to learn about their habitats. The first one on the list is frogs. Of course frogs live in many habitats, and ecosystems, so watch the video below to learn some more about frogs, and their habitats. Have fun, and have a great Sunday.

The Game Classroom

I only have time for a quick post today. We are off to the park for our play date. It is not very warm, but it has been a while since we all got together, so I will suck it up. I found this new website, with all educational games on it. It is called Game Classroom, and as far as I can tell it is free. I have not actually had a chance for the kids to try it yet, but will soon. I love games that are educational, so I am sure we will use this a lot. I actually found it quite by accident, on Facebook.
