This year DJ finished up learning about Ancient Times. In the Fall he will begin learning about The Middle Ages. He has already begun reading the book, even though he will be reading it again, LOL! I guess he just enjoys it. I use a lot of Youtube videos for supplemental education to subjects we are learning. I came across this awesome Travel Video site, and it is free. The videos are all Youtube, but they are already categorized with detailed explanations, so it saves me time searching for them myself. And they have some of the most awesome videos on there. If your kids are learning about different parts of the world, check it out. Or, if you yourself just love to learn about other places, it is great for big kids too LOL! Have fun!
Tons of homeschool info, tips, and links. Homeschooling in Florida, plus lots of other great info. Join me on our Homeschool journey. I have been adding to this blog for almost our whole time as homeschoolers, eight years. There is an abundance of info at your fingertips.

Butchart Gardens, and Joseph and His Coat Of Many Colors
We have a packed full day of History today, or Social Studies as some call it. We are continuing with our lessons about Canada by doing a virtual tour of Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. In chapter six of The Story of the World: Ancient Times we learn about David and his coat of many colors. I didn't care for the craft the student book offered, so we will be using the one here. DLTK kids offers all kinds of free crafts, and lesson plans for homeschoolers. Caitlin will continue to work on basic map reading skills, with a simple legend. They are both also starting a lapbook of the states. There are free templates of each state offered online. Print the state and then determine what you want your child to find about that state. DJ will be doing capital, flower, bird, year became a state, major industries, climate, and natural resources for each state. Caitlin will find and write the capital, then color the state. When completed they will each have a state book for future use. You can also add state flags to go along with each state. I like these lapbooks because you can add to them as the grades go on, making a complete story of what they learned.

Making Scented Oil
OK so tomorrow is Social Studies, but we are only having a half day, because we are having our playdate at the park after lunch. We are up to Chapter 4 of Ancient Times and a lot of this chapter has to deal with embalming and mummifying of the dead. One of the activities you could choose to do was to mummify a chicken! Um, Um, Hmm, no I don't think I am doing that one. We could also make fancy jars, but I opted out of more painting for now. So that left us scented oil which is actually kind of neat. In ancient times they used oils and spices on the deceased bodies to help preserve the body. If you want to make some scented oil you will need a jar with a lid, oil either cooking or baby, and any spices you like. Fill the jar to the top with the spices, this will take a lot of spices, so I got a smaller jar LOL, then add the oil to the top to completely coat the spices. Set in a sunny location for a week, and shake the jar well two to three times a day. Then drain the oil and repeat the steps if you want a stronger scent. Then you can use the spices for embalming, well no please don't do that.
For tomorrows lessons Caitlin will be doing online computer games, and DJ has his Chapter 4 Ancient Times, plus he must do his math and spelling.

Community Helpers Grade 1
I signed DJ and Caitlin up for 4H today. Let me tell you it is not your mother's 4H. They offer more than 120 programs for you to choose from, and you can order right online. DJ picked photography, and Caitlin picked butterflies. It was kind of hard for a six year old to pick. I am very much looking forward to the 4H experience. Tomorrow is Social Studies, and DJ will be doing Ancient Times, and Caitlin is doing Community Helpers, and whatever part of Ancient Times she might be interested in listening to. There are two videos below that you can use as supplement to your Community Helpers lesson.
