If you have a child going off to college, they will definitely need one of these. Even some high schools are requiring kids have access to a computer. Either way these little notebooks won't cost you a fortune, and are perfect for school assignments without getting on your PC. We bought a laptop last year for educational software, so that the kids could use that while I was working on my computer. A lot of homeschool curriculums will include at least some computer software.
