Fun At The Ocean

We had a ball at Shired Island yesterday. It is a very small state park, on the Gulf of Mexico. We have been here a few times, as it is my moms favorite place to go. It was very windy, so we were sort of cold. I am glad I had the extra shirt in the car, even though it did not match at all. The kids got in the water, and romped around, despite it being cold. I didn't find any new shells. They mostly have scallop shells, at this particular part of the Gulf, and I already have tons. I did find a cool block of shells, that formed a unique sculpture. It is on my front porch now. I will take a picture of it to share. We found some kind of critter that made these cool designs by burrowing under the sand. I wanted a horseshoe crab, or blue crab, but didn't find one, no seaglass either. If you look at the pictures you will see an armadillo. It was dead, and partially decayed. I really wanted the shell, but no one, including myself was willing to pick it up, and carry it LOL. I did get my log for our Science experiment. No, not the one the kids are walking on, my husband wouldn't carry it for me. My mother managed to not get in one single picture, not sure how she did that. I am the blonde, and my sister, and her husband have the baseball caps on. They went off to Tampa today to see friends, and we will hook up with them again tomorrow, after I grocery shop. It has gone by fast, and I can't believe it is almost time for them to go back to NC again.

Fun Friday Island Pond, Vermont

Today's Fun Friday topic, for Blogging For Fun, is favorite vacation spots. When I was a young girl, every year my mother took us to Island Pond, Vermont on vacation. We had very good friends that lived, very close in NH, and we would visit with them while there. It is a small resort town, with mainly camping, hiking, and general nature activities. It is a not a place to go, if you do not like to relax. Sometimes we would tent camp, or rent a cabin, depending on finances, and such. I have such lovely memories of going there, and would love to be able to take my kids someday, when they get a bit older. My mother used to love the many moose you could see, and we would go out at dusk to look for them. We were very close to a place called Moose Alley, where the moose were abundant, and easy to see. I tried to find some of my pictures to scan, but they are packed away. I will try to dig through them this weekend, and post a few. It is a beautiful place. We never went in winter, always in summer, but I did find two videos on youtube of the area, one in summer, and one in winter. I hope you enjoy them, and can see the beauty of the area. Have a great Friday, and weekend, everyone. By the way our playgroup yesterday was a blast. Everyone had so much fun.

Another Snake Story

Anyone who knows me, knows I am petrified of snakes. The snake pictured is an Eastern Indigo snake, and it was the snake that was on my porch last fall. I wanted my husband to kill it, but I am glad he did not because it is endangered. I will not lie when I say I was glad to see it move on to somewhere else, it was a really big snake. So I went the whole winter with no snakes, not a surprise since they hibernate. The other day, my husband, and I were standing on the front porch looking at all the water from the rain. I heard a strange noise. From watching tons of animal planet shows, the noise sounded kind of familiar. I said to my husband, do you hear that, it sounds like a baby alligator. Of course as soon as I said it, I was already thinking how fast can I put the house on the market. Well come to find out other creatures make that some distinctive noise, when they are in distress. As I was looking up at my garage, there is a very small hole, and trying to squeeze out of that small hole, was a very fat frog. I said to my husband, look at that crazy frog, trying to squeeze out of that little hole. Well it did squeeze out, and it was what was making that distinctive noise. Then it looked like its leg was stuck, and it was struggling to get free. I said OMG it is not stuck, a snake is trying to eat it. Now I can tell you my heart was racing, for sure, and my brain as I was thinking how I really hate snakes, and what am I going to do, another snake, and this one in the garage roof. Agh I wanted to run, what good would that do, right. So instead I watched. The poor frog did get away, and fell kerplunk right down into the bushes. I waited with my weapon of choice, my broom to see if the snake would let himself fall to get his very fat dinner. He did not, and I do not think it was an Indigo. It was real small, and appeared to be a garden snake, but why was he up on the roof? I really can not take it, I am constantly looking for them. When I went out to take out the garbage, I swear it was looking out of that hole at me, taunting me. LOL I know that is not possible, but I am just a tad paranoid now. I mean I grew up in rattlesnake country, in NY, and in all my 35 years there, I saw maybe two snakes. I have lived here in this house, two years, and I have seen two, with one on the neighbors porch. We live in town, and I find it strange for them to be here. Well there is my horror story for this month, and I hope the last. They really can just move on to somewhere else. I am sure there are snake lovers somewhere, but it is not me.

Common Birds, Trees, and Flowers Native To Florida

Tomorrows Science class will be covering common birds, trees, and flowers native to Florida. DJ has already taken out several books, from our local library. He loves to read to his sister, and learn about nature. He teaches her all kinds of neat facts. He is actually a better Science teacher than me lol. I just supply the tools, and he sucks it up like a sponge. I found a very cool website sponsored by the University of Florida all about native plants, and animals. You can view it here. I also added some very nice video clips on the Everglades, the area known as the Nature Coast, and birds of Florida. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
