9th Grade Homeschool Portfolio for Caitlin

This post will be viewed by our evaluator.  I will be working  on this, and updating it for the next month.  I keep some physical samples to take with us, and she also follows what we are up to on my Facebook page.  You may see affiliate links in this post.

Because it is the easiest, I will start with Math

Caitlin first did the Pre Algebra, on Edx.com, which is free by the way.  She whizzed through it, and did quite well.  However, when I moved her into Saxon Algebra 1 textbook, she just didn't seem to retain any of the info she had learned.  So, I went to Aleks.com, and that is where we will be for the remainder of her 3 years of High School.  It is not free, 20 dollars per month.   However, it is worth every penny.  I don't have to do anything.  They send me weekly reports, and she is regularly tested on new, and old information.  So, she actually retains it.  I am all in with Aleks.

Today, I am adding the Science section of this portfolio.  When we started grade 9, we started with Apologia Physical Science.  I got it on the Kindle, with Kindle Unlimited for free, so I could not resist.  Unfortunately, Caitlin did not care for it all that much, and we did half a year, for 1/2 credit.  I then rediscovered Easy Peasy High School, and she offers a great Oceanography with Lab.  The lab part is important because it is required in Florida.  We did half of it, marked where we left off, and will finish the second half for grade 10, and the labs.  She only needs 3 Science credits, so there is plenty of time, and no need to rush.  You can purchase the Apologia textbook, on Kindle, below, it isn't free though, and the link for Oceanography is highlighted.  Science is definitely not this child's favorite topic, though she really is talking a lot about the Environment.  So, I might be able to squeeze that in, but she has to do Biology first.

Now it is time to add Language Arts.  I am so glad I keep a written log book, as well as this blog, because I had forgotten about some of the things we covered.  This is actually a requirement in Florida, so it isn't like I thought of it myself.  We started the year off using Virtual Homeschool Group website.  I actually very much like this website.  You can do live lessons, they fill up fast, so get in quick if you like that.  They start enrolling August 1st.  We opted for the at your own pace options.  We did 3 books, with the lessons on this website:  Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  We then watched a very old series based on the book.  It was quite interesting.  The Time Machine, which I did not finish reading.  My son was tasked to read this book with Caitlin.  She can read quite fine, but likes to be read to, so they would alternate, and of course discuss as they went.  Animal Farm was the third book, and there was some quite animated discussions with this book.  That took us half way through the school year.  The second half of the year we concentrated on Grammar, using dailygrammar.com  There were some writing topics thrown in for good measure, but still an area that needs much work.

She did a beginner French course, that she will receive a 1/2 credit for.  She did not retain much, and didn't show as much interest as she thought she would.  So, for grade 10 she has opted to switch to Sign Language, on Virtual Homeschool Group.  She will need to do 2 years, and she is aware of that.   Of note, I think I will do 4 classes at a time instead of 5, and make up over Summers if we need to.  It is just too long of a day with 5 classes, to do a great job, imo.

History:  We covered American History from the beginning, to World War 2.  I used no official curriculum.  Rather I found a timeline online, and found videos, books, unit studies, and various other resources to make it a little more interesting than just textbooks.  We watched the Hatfields and McCoys on Netflix, which produced a lot of conversation, from both of my children, even the one that is in college.  For Grade 10 we will be covering the elections in a Civics and Government Class.  If you prefer a more traditional type of History, see a few examples below.

Caitlin chose to not do Drama this past year, because she did not like the play choice.  She continued with her 4H group, but sadly that group had it's last year, this year.  She does not feel she will join another group.  In April we started Horseback riding, at Cavalli Farms in Jonesville.  At the end of July, she requested to stop until October, because it is just too hot.  So, she will pick it back up in October, unless she decides to do drama.  Then we will have to discuss if she thinks she can handle both.

For my part I have encouraged much more focus on Writing, Socialization, Attitude, Communication Skills, Home Skills, and Following Directions.  These are the same skills we will work on in the next school year.  In January 2020 I will sign her up to take the online Driver's Ed course, for FLVS, so after she turns 16 she can get her drivers permit.  By grade 11, I fully expect she will be able to take at least one FLVS writing class.

Bring on Summer Vacation!

Last Thursday was our final full day of the regular school year.  My son will be doing a research paper, topic of his choice, for World History, next week.  I will be giving him a 1/2 credit for the year, because he just didn't have the time to do enough hours to get a full credit.  But, I think he is going to do an online FLVS for World History next year.  He has to finish up Geometry over the Summer as well.

Caitlin will also be doing a final writing assignment next week.  I let her pick the topic, and she will be posting it to her blog when completed.  She will get the option to proofread and edit it one time, before I grade it.  She knows what the Rubric is, and if she gets a grade of 75 or above, I won't make her do any Writing over the Summer.  If she doesn't she will have to continue practicing.  She will do Math, on Easy Peasy Homeschool, and Reading Assessment, a few days a week over the Summer.

I have to start getting portfolios done.  Well, actually only one this year, because DJ is taking the SAT in August, and that will count as his evaluation this year.  It doesn't save me any money, though.

In the coming weeks you will see me start to post curriculum for next year.  DJ will be mostly doing FLVS, so his will be very easy to arrange.  Caitlin will be in 8th grade, so it will be my last year to really have some fun with her, and her lessons.  You may also see me post ideas for homeschool graduation, and college readiness.

Oh, before I forget, DJ read Dracula, and Caitlin read Ann of Green Gables, plus watched the movie, and is currently reading Gentle Ben.

Evaluations and Sample Reading Lists

We have our homeschool yearly evaluations tomorrow morning.  Wish us luck!  I post the reading lists only for those who need an idea how to make a reading list for their portfolio in Florida.  Plus for my record keeping purposes.  I encourage anyone who can to get a blog so if anything ever happens to your computer your public blog will have an account of all your homeschool activities.  Caitlin read a lot of short stories this year, in her Reading Comprehension lessons.  Those are not accounted for here, and neither are DJ's from his Reading lessons.  Those all count to, but I include samples of them in the portfolio.  I use Google Docs to type the list up all nice, and then put it in the portfolio, usually at the front.  Both kids also bring a book with them to read part of it to the evaluator and she asks them pertinent questions.

Darien’s Reading List For 2012/2013 7th Grade
Darien read a lot of books this past school year. However, they are not all listed here because
we don’t keep track of all of them. We visit the library twice monthly, during the school year, and
Darien enjoys taking out books to read. The books shown below, are books I chose for him to
read and he did book reports on.
Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Lancelyn Green
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
The Time Machine by HG Wells
The three book series of Percy Jackson The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

Caitlin’s Reading List For 2012/2013 3rd Grade
Caitlin read a lot of books this past school year. However, they are not all listed here because
we don’t keep track of all of them. We visit the library twice monthly, during the school year, and
Caitlin enjoys taking out books to read. She reads a lot of animal books, and especially likes
horse, cat and dog books. She also reads a lot on We Give Books. A reading website where
every time the child reads a book, the same books is donated to schools and organizations that
give books to children. Below are some of the books she has read.
Froggy Goes to Hawaii by Johnathon London
SkippyJon Jones and the Big Bones by Judy Schachner
Madeline
Ladybug Girl at the Beach
The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Mommy Loves Me
Every Biscuit book she can find.

Election 08 Observations, Socialism, Pumpkin Cake, First 30 Days Of School

I have a lot to talk about today. Friday and Saturday, are always extra busy. I hardly ever get to post on Saturday, so I jam a bunch in on Friday. My first topic is about politics. Of course it is on my mind, because it is getting close now. If you check my poll, it is pretty even, who people are voting for. I am an Independant, and moderate conservative. I am leaning towards McCain. However for McCain to win, he needs to get more aggressive. They say he has a temper, and can be aggressive. Really, because all I have seen is a man who looks like a puppet on a string. He needs to light some fire, and get a little fired up. Show some spunk, he is looking pretty boring. As for Obama, I simply can not see myself voting for him. There are too many things I dont like. At first he looked promising to me, now I have to say no. First I dont know how he can claim he will not raise taxes, when Universal Health Care has to be paid for somehow. I think health care for everyone is a marvelous idea, but you have to say how you will pay for it. He never clearly answers any questions, not ever. He just very charismatically goes around the question, and gives some fancy eloquent type speech. No clear answers, just more questions. I do not like the fact that he has ties to Bill Ayers, a Domestic Terrorist, or ACORN who is being investigated for voter fraud. I do not like the fact that he is so ultra Liberal, that he seems more of a Socialist.

That leads me to my next topic, Socialism. My understanding of Socialism, is that the government runs everything, and the people all live as one class, with everyone having the same. That sounds great, right? However, is that actually feasible? How do you manage this without war, corruption, and keeping a Democratic Nation. I do not believe it is possible.

Now on to some more topics about Homeschool. I have evaluated our first 30 days of school, and all is going well. DJ, started Division this week, and has picked it up pretty easily. I was very nervous about this, because as I stated previously knowing how to divide, and teaching division are not the same thing. His biggest challenge remains Grammar and Writing. Mostly in the area, of remembering all the Grammar principles, and sloppy writing. He is lax, in using punctuation, and capitals, but is improving every day, and improved immensely from last year. His strong topics remain, Reading, and Science, where is nearly perfect. He reads at a
5th grade level, and Science is always 100 percent. Caitlin is doing preschool activities, and progressing nicely. Her biggest issue is Phonics, mainly because she has no interest. I do not, at this age, push it hard, but let her learn at her own pace.

Contest updates will be added on Sunday. Be sure to get your entries in, to win 10 dollars, and free advertising.

Below is a cute, and easy Pumpkin cake you can make, to share with friends and family. I hope everyone has a splendid weekend. Please remember I welcome all comments, and thoughts. Dont be shy I dont bite.

Terrific Thursdays, My Favorite Blogs

Starting today, and every Thursday, I will be posting about one of my favorite blogs. Everyday I visit blogs, and some of them are great. These sites may, or may not be related to homeschooling, but several different topics. Today I am going to start with work at home mom revolution. I love this blog, because as a stay at home mom, I am always looking for work from home opps. She has tons of work at home opps, alot are freelancing or writing jobs. These are great for anyone who wants to make a little extra money, while staying home with your kids. I have not found any that, I am completely qualified for, but she is always adding new jobs, and tons and tons of info. If you have not checked out her blog yet go to http://workathomemomrevolution.blogspot.com/ and see if there is a job available for you. This is one of my favorite blogs, and I check it often, even if I forget to drop my card, sorry.

Tomorrow is my sons Homeschool Evaluation, our first, and I have no idea how long it takes. Then my husband has an online webinar, for his work at home job. Yes even my husband, has a work at home job, along with his full time job. It allows us to cover some of the expense of our health insurance, since they have cut his overtime. Anyway, I may not be able to drops, comments, or new posts til late Fri, or not even until Sat or Sun, depending on TS Fay, and my weekend job.

Please check out my contest at my other blog, http://www.melissasjewelryandgemstoneblog.blogspot.com You can win a SS blue topaz ring, details can be found in the archives. All you have to do is give me a recipe for a cake that a dog will love.

Whew I Finished My First Homeschool Porfolio, What A Task

It took me almost all day yesterday, but DJ's second grade portfolio is done. This is my very first one, so I wasnt exactly sure, what I needed to include. I had to go over every piece of paper, and project we did, and there was a lot. What I ended up doing, was keeping all his book reports, all art projects, handwriting sheets, and then all weeekly tests. I didnt add all the craft projects, because they take up too much room. I added most of the science and social studies work, because those were only done once or twice a week. Our focus this year, was reading and math. I also added my curriculum, reading list, youth baseball records, library visits, and any other social activities. Our evaluation, is not due until September, but I wanted to get this task done especially since I had no idea how long it would take. It is a huge load off my chest. For third grade, I will be sure to just separate the tests, and projects I want to showcase, for next years portfolio, and save myself some time. In Florida, we have to keep every piece of school work done, for two years, but you only need a sampling for your portfolio. Now DJ just has to decorate it, to his liking, and we will be all set for our evaluation. To all my dedicated readers, tomorrow we are going to Chuck E Cheese, so I will not be able to drop cards, leave comments, or add new content. If I get a chance in the evening, maybe, but I do have to work 11-7 tomorrow night, as well, so I probably wont be adding any updates until Sunday.
