Guest Post from Mighty Moms

Hi everyone!  I hope you are having an amazing Thursday.  Emily from Mighty Moms reached out to me to do a guest blog post on finances for teens and young adults.  I read the article and she offers some great advice.  Be sure and check out her website, too.

A Head Start – Financial Tips for Teens and Young Adults
From first part-time jobs to college graduations, your teens and twenties offer plenty of moments of financial transition. These milestones aren’t just a sign you’re growing into an adult; they’re also a great opportunity to begin learning how to manage your money like one. Here are a few tips for the young or soon-to-be adult looking to give themselves a financial head start.
Track Your Spending and Start a Budget
It’s enormously difficult to make changes before you know what, exactly, you’re changing. For a few weeks, just keep track of where and how you spend your money. You can do this in a budget app, spreadsheet, or even just an old-school notebook.
Whichever method you use, make sure to note the date, total, and location of everything you spend. You can also make a few notes to give yourself an idea of how you might categorize that spending once you’ve reached that point. For example, next to the line tracking filling up your gas tank, you might note, “Car,” and next to a ticket to a movie, you might note, “Entertainment.”

Once you have a sense of how you spend your money, you can start trying to build a budget. Set aside a specific amount each month into your spending categories, and commit to keeping your spending within those limits. Track every purchase, and check in throughout the month to see how you’re doing. It will take practice, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t nail it right away.
Consider Future Expenses
Generally speaking, the younger you are, the fewer expenses you have. If you still live with your parents, your room and board are likely covered, leaving you with plenty of income. Even if you’re out of the house, you may still be years away from childcare costs, medical expenses, mortgage payments, and other future expenses.
Here are a few down-the-road items it’s wise to start saving for early:
  • Retirement – The sooner you start saving for retirement, the better a position you’ll be in once that stage rolls around. Putting 5 percent of each paycheck into an IRA or company retirement fund will set you up for financial stability in your golden years.

  • House Payments If you think you may want to own property, start saving for a down payment earlier, rather than later. When it comes time to buy, you’ll want to have enough saved up for a 20 percent down payment. Less than that, and you’ll see costly mortgage insurance added onto your regular mortgage payment.

  • Car Costs – Just like with a house, the more money you set aside for car costs, the more power you’ll have when it comes to purchasing a car. However, keep in mind that car payments aren’t the only cost associated with driving. You’ll also need to save for repairs, gas, and insurance. Auto insurance can be one of your higher expenses, particularly depending on your age and gender. Where you live and the type of car you drive can also impact how much your insurance costs, so it's best to maintain a good driving record and to even take defensive driving courses if you want to work toward lower payments.
Make Useful Goals
Once you have a sense of your budget and what kind of expenses you can expect in the future, you can start making goals. However, it’s important to make goals that are clear and detailed. A goal like “I want to save for a house” is fine, but “I want to put away at least $200 a month so that in 10 years, I’ll have at least $24,000 to go toward my down payment” is better.
Whatever goals you decide to focus on, create a clear plan for how to achieve them and stick to it. Do this, and you’ll be ready to take on the future.

Summer Vacation, Blogging, Kindergarten Curriculum

I have had a few people ask me, if the new logo, means I do not blog through the summer. The answer is no. We will be on Summer Vacation, from lessons, but I still blog all summer long. I do some paid posts, and may explore other topics to discuss.

DJ is not feeling well today, so he is just going to read his Harry Potter book. We need to finish it up by the end of the year. He will make up todays work tomorrow, which is test day.

This time of the year, is when I start doing my curriculum for next year, and finding the info to cover the lesson plans. I am posting Caitlin's kindergarten curriculum, with DJ's to follow soon. Because I do my own, I add or remove things I do not want in there. Some of the kindergarten stuff was kind of dumb, and I took it out. Shifting Focus

Well it is almost the end of third grade, already. Now my focus, and attention shifts to making my 4th grade curriculum, and kindergarten curriculum. Kindergarten is pretty easy, Caitlin will be mostly focusing on learning to read, following directions, and math. She has pretty much covered most of the other things in preschool. As for DJ 4th grade is a big step for him. It is a time to wrap up everything he has learned, and expand on them. He has improved so much in his writing, I am impressed. He asked me the other day, when he could start a blog of his own. At first I was like hmm I don't think for a while. Then it occurred to me that he could use a blog, as an everyday writing assignment. Because he will pick the topic, and will have to stay on the topic, using proper writing, and grammar rules, it will actually be a good assignment for him. So for 4th grade his year long writing assignment will be his own personal blog. Of course he will need assistance for searching out topics, ideas, pictures, and other information he will need. I think this will be an interesting assignment for him, and I will not have to scramble to come up with writing ideas. I spend a good part of the summer making lesson plans, and researching information. I have really enjoyed this school year, and look forward to the next. We have started our own playgroup for children who both homeschool, and do not. So far we have 4 moms, and 15 children. I did this because I am not patient at waiting for other groups to decide whether we can join or not, are not active enough, or live way too far away from us. So far it is going well, and we are planning a pool party at the end of May.

Lesson plans for 5/04/09:

Science: Planets
Math: Factor turn arounds, graphs, division
Writing: You found a magic lamp, what three wishes will you make
Language Arts: Irregular verbs, mystery map
Spelling: Lesson 30 write each spelling word two times each
Vocabulary: Look up the definition for each vocabulary word
PE: 30 minutes

I Am Looking For A Few Good Bloggers For Blog Support Group

I want to start a group, on Yahoo groups for bloggers, to support each other, leave comments, advice, tips etc. It is free, and open until 100 bloggers have joined. Once I get a few that are interested I will post the link to join the group. It will be easy, just go to the group, at least three times a week, view each blog listed, and leave a pertinent to the topic, comment. Easy, and everyone wins. You can also post topics for discussion on the group. If it gets to where only some people are participating, those that do not will be deleted. It will be capped at 100 blogs, so let me know if you are interested. Please comment me here, or on either of my other blogs, to let me know you are interested.

We are on Spring Break next week, so no lesson plans to post. Spring cleaning, to come.

New Years Goals For This Blog

2009 is just around the corner. I have some goals I am setting, for this blog, for 2009. I have a current page rank of 1, and would like to get that increased to at least a 2. Higher would be great, but I try to set goals that are achievable. I would like to increase the revenue from adspace. Project Wonderful, has paid me once already, so that is great. Adsense is not too bad, I hope to make payout in 2009. I wish they would lower their payout limit from 100 dollars to something, just a little bit less. I get paid posts through Social Spark, and that has earned me over 100 dollars. Of course I would like to see that increase, with more paid opportunities. I have been with Adgitize since the end of November, and have made 1.44 there. Your earnings depend a lot on what other members do, as well as what you yourself do on the site. I want to add a link box with all my favorite educational, and information sites. That one will take a while, as there are so many that I use. It will be more user friendly, however for anyone that visits this blog looking for information. I am thinking of having some guest bloggers, other homeschoolers or educators. I think that would be interesting, and fun. I am always reading, and searching for new, and interesting topics that would be great to read. It doesn't necessarily have to be about homeschooling, education or learning in general is great. Here is to a wonderful, and happy new year to everyone.

Ways I Make Extra Money Online

Add to Technorati Favorites

When I had my second child, I decided to work less outside the home, and more inside the home. First my pregnancy was extremely difficult, she was a fussy baby, and day care for two children was extremely expensive. We were still in NY, and planning to move to Florida. I initially went to the 11-7 shift, at my Hospital job, and started researching work from home. Let me say, most of them are no good, pyramid or ponzi schemes, and you will work your butt off, for little or no money. I must have joined every PTC, and PTR program on the planet, and left most of them as well. If they offer a free upgrade, with free advertising they can be useful, if they actually get any clickers to their site. That mostly refers to PTR programs. I no longer belong to any PTR programs, as they are a waste of time, and earn only the site owner revenue. These are the PTC programs, that I still belong to, and my evaluation of each.
Isabel Marcos: I am close to payout here, and other members say they pay quickly, and on time. I will see.
Pay2surf.net: I have made my payout of 40 dollars, requested it, and have been waiting almost 60 days for them to pay me. If it goes much longer, I will leave that site, and claim them a useless scam site.
That is it, I have left all other programs, because they do not pay within their terms, and I refuse to wait more than 45 days to be paid. Whoever came up with such a thing anyways. If I went to my nursing job, and they told me we are not going to pay you for 45 days, but we would still like you to work, I would say yeah ok see you later. These PTC sites currently owe me money, and have owed me for at least 90 days if not more:
Daddy Bux, Advercash, Bux.to, VIP Bux, there are several other programs that I have left before payout because their site does not offer any reasonable number of clicks to even reach payout, or their sites are littered with spyware, and viruses. Buxto has owed me money for almost 6 months now.

Now to the programs, and things that actually do work.

If you are a freelance writer, which I am not, there are tons of jobs for you. I initially started this blog, to improve my writing skills, in hopes of someday getting a freelance writing job. I have not tried for any new ones, but it is in my future goals.

Just Answers: If you have a skill such as in the medical field, pet expert, teacher, automotive field, etc then this website would work for you. I have made over 600 dollars there, and it has been a life saver when we needed extra money. They have very strict rules, and guidelines, so be sure to review them before beginning.

Cha Cha: Cha Cha is a text service network. Customers text in their questions, and Guides answer their questions, and send it back to their phone. It is hugely popular, and constantly growing. There are 3 current positions available, Guides, Translators, and Expiditors. I am currently an Expiditor, and I work a couple of hours a day, and make approximately 6 dollars a day. Not a lot of money, but if I worked more, I could make more, and it works out to about 150 dollars per month. Enough to buy my jewelry supplies, xmas gifts, or pay bills. They offer a pay me now service where you can get paid right on a debit card, it is a wonderful service. They are not easy to get in with, and I had to wait almost 5 months from my initial application to get accepted. It is not a hard job, though it can get extremely busy.

Mylot: Mylot is a forum type website. You get paid to post and respond to topics. I have been there well over a year, and they always pay on time, and via paypal. Their minimum payout is 10 dollars.

Clixsense: This is a PTC program, and just about the only one that actually pays when they are supposed to, on time, and never with problems. I have been there almost 2 years, and they pay via check.

Blogging: I have two blogs, this blog and a jewelry blog. They both have Adsense. I have made 18 dollars, from Adsense, since April of this year. I have no idea if that is good or not, but it seems OK to me. I initially did not start blogging, to earn money, but after reading several topics on the issue it seems to be working pretty good. I use Social Spark for paid posts, and have made 75 dollars from that. I only do one or two paid posts a month, as some I do not feel qualified to post about. I can not do Pay per post, because they do not accept Blogspot blogs. That is ok, because too many paid posts will bring down your Google page rank.

Project Wonderful: Project Wonderful, is a program to sell advertising space on your blog. The rates are pretty inexpensive, so advertisers like it. I have been there since May, and have made almost 7 dollars. Their payout is 10 dollars.

I am trying to sell advertising links, on my own. I offer them for 3 dollars for 30 days, payable via Paypal. I have not had any takers yet.

For those who are skilled enough in writing, About.com offers a wonderful program for you. I did not qualify, but I hope to advance my skills enough, and will reapply next year. They offer a wonderful compensation program, for you to update and maintain a topic oriented page.

My husband works for West At Home, and has been there for at least two years. It is basically Customer Service, and the wage is decent. Their rules are strict, and you must meet their computer requirements. Right now he only does, the required amount, per month, to remain active.

Tomorrow is a test day, so I have no lesson plans to post.
