Why Do They Call It Black Friday?
Silly me, I always thought it was called Black Friday, because of the way people acted on that day. Rude, obnoxcious, out of control, all negative things so I just assumed that is why it was given such a name. Of course, now that I am older, and much wiser, I know Black Friday really refers to the amount of sales done on that day. To bring them out of the red, and into the black in other words to make a profit. They offer huge discounts, and specials which people will start lining up for sometimes at 3 AM. I participated once, as a young woman, and vowed to never do it again. I could not believe the fashion in which people behave, to just save a few bucks. The pushing, shoving, cursing, running, trampling, screaming, grabbing, just plain rude behavior. I am assuming if you watch the news, you know where this story is going. A Wal-Mart on Long Island had a major incident on Black Friday. A store worker, was trampled to death by shoppers. The shoppers were so intent on getting in the store, they pushed the doors right off the hinges, in the mad rush. While the worker lie on the floor gasping for air, not one shopper stopped to help, or see if he was ok, they just kept trampling over him to get to the all mighty deals. A pregnant woman, was also injured in the stampede. Thankfully though she was injured, her baby is okay. Of course they are somehow trying to blame Wal-Mart for this. How is Wal-Mart to blame for the way these people acted. They had no regard for life, to get a toy, or TV or some other object. I can not even begin to say how disgusted I am with this whole Black Friday shopping day. Not to mention with society, and the values that have been ignored.

this is so sad indeed melissa. like you, i had no idea before what black friday means, i know we have good friday in the philippines, but black friday? anyway, that walmart story is really horrible, hard to understand why people would go crazy like that to trample a man into his death. wouldn't they know they are already stepping on someone's helpless body?
I know it is awful. At first they were trying to blame Walmart, but the police are viewing video and trying to pinpoint who did it. I think that will be hard, since everyone seemed to do it, just looking at him and kept on going. I really think these people should all be ashamed of themselves.
