11 Easy DIY No Carve Pumpkins and Other Fall Foliage Home Decor

This video has some ideas that I really love, and not just for Halloween.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner, some of these can be table decor for that holiday too.  I love the Mums table pieces, especially.  Some of this stuff you can get right at the Dollar Tree.  I love the Dollar Tree.  Starting in November I will be sharing some posts for Operation Christmas Child projects that I am working on.  If they are simple enough, our church will include our youth in making them for next year's campaign.  If you don't support OCC, that is ok a lot of these projects can be donated to any charity group you support.

Whimsy Wednesday: Halloween Minute to Win It Games

We are kind of big game fans in this house.  Well, at least 3 out of 4 of us are, lol.  When we were still in 4H each week the kids would play a new Minute to Win It game as a sort of Ice Breaker.  The kids really loved these games and it really helped them learn teamwork and getting to know each other.  Click the link to go to the source of the games, let me know which ones you tried and if you loved them or not.  The image is from the source link.

Throwback Thursday: Why We do Halloween?

Why Do We Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween, sometimes called All Hallows Eve, Night of the Dead, and other creepy names. But why do we really celebrate Halloween? Why, did we start Halloween? Some cultures do you use Halloween, as a celebration of the dark side. For the most part, Halloween is a fun celebration, to dress up and be someone else for a night.

Halloween started many years ago, in other countries. These other countries celebrated the end of Summer and the season of the Sun. They prepared for a season of cold, and long nights. October 31st was the day they chose to hold their festival, sometimes referred to as the Fall Festival or Harvest.

When settlers came to America, they brought their holiday customs with them. Many of the settlers came from different countries. Of course, all the customs have been joined and we have our own Halloween celebration. The most important symbol of Halloween is the Pumpkin.

The early settlers used to cut out other fruits and vegetables, and decorate them. The people of Ireland cut out and decorated Turnips. They hollowed out the Turnip and put a candle on the inside. When the Irish came to America they used big, round, orange Pumpkins, and now we have our famous Jack-O-Lantern.

Years ago, in other countries, the poor would beg for food. They were called souls, and people would give them soul cakes. The beggars would then promise that they would remember the dead.

Here, today in America children dress in silly, funny, and scary costumes and go Trick Or Treating. The receive candy, and small trinkets in their basket or pumpkin of choice.

Halloween has become a huge profit maker for American businesses, and according to early polls, people have spent more money on Halloween this year, than any other year. Some companies base their whole company on Halloween and are actually closed for the rest of the year. You can find almost any costume imaginable, now today. From celebrities to superheroes, princesses, politicians, whatever you could think of. It has become one night of fun, a night to get away from the stress of the real world and live in a fantasy. To be someone else for one night, isn't that something everyone wants?

Please remember your Halloween safety rules:

Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
Wear a light on your suit, or carry a flashlight
Walk on walkways, not the street if possible
Go slow, kids run out in the street without thinking
Never eat any candy, before it has been thoroughly inspected by an adult
Have fun, isn't that the most important one

Halloween Books for Kids

We finished off another awesome week of homeschooling. The kids are racking up miles for the 5 Points of Life Relay for Kids, and should have the paper filled up soon. I work this weekend, and next week is another busy week with Archery, 4H, Earth Kids, Church and of course Run Club. Anyone who says homeschooled children are not socialized apparently do not know what they are talking about. We are plenty socialized, good socialization not nonsense socialization. Below are some Halloween theme books your kiddos might enjoy reading. The first one appears to be free, so enjoy it while it is. Be sure to check the price before you complete check out. I have been nailed a couple of times with posts that offer free books, but not all are free and I did not pay attention. Some are worth paying for too, though. We love The Berenstein Bears, well at least my youngest does. My son prefers the scary stories. Remember that at the bottom of this blog is my Amazon Homeschool Store.  Look there for all your textbook, workbook and craft needs.  I will be scouring around for Halloween apps this weekend to share.

I am honestly tired of talking about Politics. I will be glad when it is over. I have started a free give away book clug. If you are anything like me, you have tons of books, magazines, and other reading material just lying around your house. I have started the club, it is up and running, and it is free. You just post your book, you are offering, and wait for someone to say they want it. Simple, right? You can join using the button provided, in this post, or the button posted above. As a homeschooler, and jewelry maker, I am always looking for new and interesting books. Once you are done with the book, you can either re post it, or keep it if you really love it. Join today, and lets start reading.

As you are all aware, Halloween is right around the corner. Next week in Arts and Crafts, we are going to try making Paper Mache Pumpkins. The directions are simple, and the supply list is just as easy. If you want to try your hand at Paper Mache, go here http://www.kidsturncentral.com/holidays/crafts/hcrafta.htm

For anyone who may be interested, I am going to offer a Layaway service, for all items on my jewelry blog, and Etsy store. Christmas will be here soon. Click my widget, to go to my Etsy store. Funschool, Fall And Halloween, Lesson Plans

Yesterday, we had a little extra time at the end of the day, so DJ played games on Funschool. If you have never been to Funschool, it has tons of educational, learning games, for children. We have been using it for over a year. Caitlin plays preschool games, there as well, although she prefers Nick Jr. If you have young children, both of these sites are awesome add ons to your homeschooling, after school fun, or just plain fun.

With Fall here, the air is cooler, less humidity, the leaves are starting to fall off the trees, and of course we start thinking about Halloween. Here is a bit of trivia, that my husband told me. Gainesville, FL which is about 30 min from us, is the farthest point South where leaves fall off of trees. Points south of there, stay too warm for leaves to change, and fall off. What do your children want to be for Halloween? My son always has to pick something, that I cant just find at the local Walmart. This year, he wants to be some Yugi Oh character. I found one on ebay, and did win the bid, for a very reasonable price, so he is happy. My youngest, of course, can not decide. I have looked at several different costumes, for her, none of which she can decide on. She will be my last minute costume buyer. I still can not find any of my fall decorations, I can not imagine where they are. Over the next weeks, I will be posting some very cool Halloween recipes, craft ideas, etc. So be sure to watch for them. I will also be announcing a new contest. This time it will be for both blogs. This blog will win a free 2 month link, on the side bar. My jewelry blog, will win a ring made by me. I want it to be Fall themed, but also to increase my traffic, and readers. If anyone has any ideas, between now and Sept 30th please share.
